A great bag of clean, pure sphagnum moss.
I ordered this moss to go along with a few other materials (pebbles, sand, charcoal pellets, etc.) to build a substrate in which to grow Venus Flytrap plants. I'm very pleased with what I received. I mean, it's sphagnum moss, so there's a limit on how excited a person can get- But this is good moss. This is not the stranded-style moss; This particular product has more of a 'chopped' appearance and resembles very clean, dry brown soil. This stuff has great consistency and quality- no pebbles, wood chips, stems, perlite or any other fillers or contaminants.Venus Flytrap plants require a soil mixture with very little mineral/nutrient content. For that reason it's important to use clean, 100% pure peat moss such as this in the mixture. The moss' job is to hold water and help keep the soil mix damp. This moss is a little pricier than others but it's definitely high-quality stuff and exactly what I needed for my project.

Used as an aquarium substrate VERY HAPPY
So i used this as an aquarium substrate. I have super hard and super basic water and all the fish i enjoy keeping need softer more acidic water THIS STUFF DID THE TRICK! I used this bag 2 ways 1.) I got the peat moss good and wet then set up a layer of it under my river rocks and let the tank cycle (fishless cycle). Added my drift wood and almond leaves (im working a black water biotype tank) and got my tanins up. Its been wonderful for the plants im keeping in the tank as well.2.) I put a small amount of peatmoss in a nylon stocking and added it to my filter in an already cycled tank and got the water parameters to the level of softness i was looking for. Now my fish are thriving!!!NOTE: I love tannins in my tanks. I think it makes for a much more natural looking environment. This defiantly helped me to acheive the tea color i am looking for in my tanks.

I did have a couple of issues, probably more ...
I did have a couple of issues, probably more due to my inexperience than to the product itself. First, it didn't contain as much product as I had pictured, it just barely filled a flat of small vegetable starters, maybe an inch deep. Second, and this one is my fault, wet your moss before planting! When completely dry out of the package, this will actually repel water.

Carnivorous Plant Owners Unite
I tried specific carnivorous plant soils and they almost killed my Venus Fly Trap. Using this I brought it back to life, and have raised 4 more. This is my 2nd package to plant some babies.Soak it first, use a bottom watering technique, and enjoy your carnivorous friends.
