Just don't drop it!
My nephew had one of these and my little boy instantly wanted one, so I bought one to put in his stocking at Christmastime. Well, we were traveling out of town and the globe didn't even make it back home in one piece. It was dropped by one of his cousins on the floor and, although surprisingly it didn't shatter, a couple of the little light pieces broke off into the globe. There is no way to get them out. Now whenever we turn it on it makes a really loud clanking sound. If we could have avoided a fall, this would have been great.

Quality Toy and Visually Entertaining
I saw a child playing with this entertaining toy of flashing, spinning LEDs creating 32 colorful display patterns. This toy is definitely a big-bang for the buck. As an electrical engineer curious as to know how this thing was made, I purchased a few. My original thought was the LED connections were transferred down to the stationary handle via a setup of splip rings. But instead, the battery voltage is transferred up to the LEDs via a slip ring and the motor shaft, making a complete circuit. Thinking about it, this is a reasonable design approach. What you can't see is the controlling electronics placed inside the spinning, star-shaped assembly. I haven't torn into the star-shaped assembly, but not much of a mystery to me what's probably contained therein. The three, AAA batteries supplied and installed in the toy last a long, long time. I eventually replaced the AAA batteries with Duracells, and had some problems with the Duracells making electrical contact within the toy. The supplied FREEGO batteries are 0.390" diamter and the Duracell AAA batteries are a tad over 0.400". The three Duracell batteries are tight within the handle's battery clip, and the batteries don't move freely. After about ten minutes of playing around, I got the Duracells to work by tapping the bottom of the handle on a hard surface and with no problems thereafter. Next time I need to replace the batteries, a rasp will be used to remove some plastic and make a little more room for the larger, Duracell batteries.Overall, this toy is surprisingly made well. My personal preference is to remove the outer globe, but not recommending this for kids. A removed globe could place someone in harm of the spinning assembly. To remove the globe, I placed the globe inside a vise jaw and slightly compress the seam of the ball and that will break the seal. The toy is assembled with four Phillips screws and the removal of the screws will allow access to the globes base for easy removal of the two halves. Without the globe, the LEDs are brighter. Replace the batteries when the blue LEDs becom dim.The toy appears very safe for children of all ages. It's also fun for the bigger kids (up to 65 years and beyond); such as myself. You come home from a stressful workday? Just fire up the spinning, colorful lights and enjoy. You'll love it.

Kids love it, but breaks VERY easily
After reading other reviews that said how easily this broke, I bought 2 of these for my 16-month old. A friend of ours has one that she loved, and I'd searched for months trying to find it (without knowing the name of this toy). Both my 5- and 3- year olds love this too! It's a very cool little toy, but it really does break easy. My son dropped this on our linoleum kitchen floor... the red and blue handle snapped in half like it was nothing... quite a waste of $5. on the other one, the battery compartment won't stay securely on. I had to tape it down. Make this more sturdy, and it'll fly off the shelves better... its just the weakest plastic I've ever seen in my life... so beware of that!

Nothing this much fun is going to last. Get over it.
These things will break. Just get that out of the way to start, but kids dearly love them while they work. There's a life lesson in their fragility, like china tea sets for little girls, which teach them to take care of their things. These may teach the lesson that one should not use something that looks like a glass ball on a handle as a hammer. Beyond that, these things are clearly ephemeral at the very outset. They will quit working no matter how well kids take care of them. It's in their nature. But look, it's a glass ball on a stick that makes pretty lights. It's just not going to last forever. While it does... joy.

son loves it but ordered 2 and received 2 damaged units
We had a similar one that ended up having a cracked plastic dome, which eventually became a danger due to sharp edges. This new item arrived with some problems. We ordered 2 but one is unopened as a backup. The one we are using has a dome that is not sealed. We had to tape it closed. Also, the button for activating it works intermittently. It often sticks in the on position so it will keep spinning even if you don't press the button. We sometimes have to press it a few times to even get the lights to come on. Though, once it spins, it will keep spinning if you are holding in the button. Another problem it has is that we have to shake it to get it to start spinning. I tested the batteries and they seem good but perhaps I should try new ones just in case it doesn't have enough power to start spinning on its own.Update: Changing the batteries on the first unit did not help it. I still had to hit it a few times to get it to spin. It stopped being used much after the first week. After about 2 months, it stopped working. It would not spin or respond in any way. We finally opened the second unit and found that it spins fine but does not light up. Now, I'll be downgrading my review from 3 to 1 star. I got 2 damaged units.

Excellent customer service!
Unfortunately, the product arrived inoperable due to a corroded battery. Per the shipper’s enclosed receipt, I contacted them directly vs Amazon. I received an email reply within 24 hours and a working replacement in the mail.Thank you! So much better than returning IG to Amazon!
