Super disappointed.
I had high hopes for this book since it is endorsed by Dr. Damian Dressler's dog cancer website. While there is good information about dog nutrition, there are three big drawbacks. 1) Few if any grain-free meal recipes. 2) Information on calcium supplementation is only given for bone meal. I prefer using egg shell powder, so I'd have to look up the substitution amounts for each recipe. 3) - and this is the biggie - the recipes are organized according to dog weight, with recipes for dogs in 5-lb increments (5 lb dog, 10 lb dog, 15 lb dog, etc. . . ). Some of the recipes are found in multiple wt categories, so you can feasibly make a batch of something that would accommodate a 10 lb dog & a 50 lb dog (like I have). However, there is no measure given for portions - like "1 cup serving for 10lb dog; 4 cup serving for 50 lb dog" - instead, one is instructed to prepare the recipe (for the specific dog) & then divide the whole batch into 2 or 4 portions (or some are just 1 portion). . . which makes it very confusing if I want to feed both my dogs (diff. wts) w/ the same recipe (without making 2 separate batches). Also, amounts for meat in the recipes are given in cups, not weight (1 lb, etc. . . ), which makes it difficult to know how much, say, chicken breast, I need to purchase in the first place. I'm a vegetarian, so buying & preparing meat for my dog is a big deal. This book makes the process confusing & difficult if I'm cooking for both my dogs. I realize this book might have very precise nutritional provision in the recipes, due in part to the way things are measured, but still - I need a canine recipe book that makes this process EASY.I much prefer the way "Feed Your Best Friend Better" by Rick Woodford is organized. This is not a perfect book, but it presents recipes that make larger batches, then lists guidelines for using the same recipe for feeding dogs of diff. wts. His book is lacking in many grain free recipes, but the recipes are much easier to use.I realize I need more than just 1 book to help me feed my dogs home-cooked meals, but I kind of wish I hadn't purchased this one (Better Food for Dogs).

One Star
Another faux "book" padded with gratuitous recipes, lists etc. Very thin on real text.

Good book
My Vet recommended this book because I was making my own recipe for dog food, which he also approved. My dogs were getting pretty picky about their food. I do not like manufactured dog food brands because there are no regulations about what ingredients are used. This book is essential to anyone who wants healthier food for their dogs. It is great!! I would highly recommend this book. The recipes (mine was in the book) are made for different weights of dogs such as 5lb, 10lb. Etc. up to very large dogs. Very organized and easy to follow.
