Design, Create, and Quilt: How to Design a Quilt-- Lessons, Techniques, and Patterns

I don't usually use other peoples' patterns for my quilts. Thus, this book was a little disappointing for me. There is a short topical tutorial preceding each pattern, but I'd have preferred expanded tutorial, and no patterns at all, or perhaps one pattern to cover 2-3 tutorials. I should have known - I once owned the author's Dream Landscapes, but sold it b/c I'm not a patterns fan. The amazon preview of this book played down the patterns, and I was fooled into thinking there would be few or none. My fault, entirely, but I still probably won't use the book much due to my pattern aversion. Please be clear about one thing, though: I love Rose Hughes designe, even if I don't want to copy them. And anyone who enjoys learning new techniques by following a quick pattern is sure to love this book.

This book is graphically lovely but very difficult to follow. As a beginner quilter, I found the instructions to be too sketchy. I went out and spent a fair amount of money getting all the supplies necessary for the 1st project. Following the directions to the letter, I ended up with pockets with raw edges which really does not look finished. The directions also call for the binding to go on last after the tab has been attached. How in the world does that work? I could not bind over the closure tab. May be someone with more experience would know how to do that.I really hesitate to try any further projects at this point and feel like I ruined some beautiful fabric trying to create my magic folder.Barbara

It has a lot of good points. I was a little bored by this book maybe I have read too many on this topic that could've been the reason but this author does do a good job communicating the ability to design and create Quilts so I think you can enjoy it

Lots of ideas for creating art quilts. Lots of tips and shortcuts to help with any sewing progects. Enjoyed it.

I took a class with Rose Hughes and used the book to make other art pieces later. It was like having her to guide me.

Great book for your library.. Fun book to have. Easy to follow directions.

I appreciate Rose Hughes' approach - simple and complex at the same time. I love her use of colour - Beautiful book. Robyn

I am looking forward to trying out some new ways to piece and create pictures that I had only dreamed about doing before.
