It is a good solution if you don't want, or you can't, run ethernet wires.
My internet service is ADSL, which is supplied via a landline, but I live in an apartment which has only a single telephone outlet located near the entrance door, and I wanted to locate my computer at the other end of the living room. I tried to do that using a WiFi router, but then the router interfered with my cordless phone because the base of the cordless phone were too close to the router. I had three options: a) Separate the router from the base of the cordless phone, b) Ditch the cordless phone, c) Run an Ethernet wire or a telephone wire from the telephone outlet located at the entrance door to the other extreme of the living room. I didn't wanted to run new wires, and ditching the cordless phone or the router was a no-no for me so I decided to give powerline adapters a try. My idea was to leave the ADSL modem near the cordless phone base, relocate the WiFi router to my computer table, use the powerline adapters to connect the ADSL modem to my router and then connect my PC to the router using an Ethernet patchcord, thus leaving the WiFi for my smartphone. That way I could leave the cordless phone where it was, while separating the WiFi router from the base of the cordless phone enough to avoid any undesired interference without having to run any new wires, and that is what I did as soon as I got the Powerline kit. In my current setup, between the AC outlets used by the powerline transmitter and receiver, there must be more or less 40 meters of electrical wire. The adapters were able to make a stable link of 197 Mbps between them, which is more than satisfactory to connect an ADSL modem to a WiFi router. Just for the sake of curiosity, I connected my desktop PC directly to one of the powerline adapters and I noticed that the ethernet port of my PC was able to establish a 1000 Mbps connection between the powerline adapter and the PC. That means that the kit comes with Gigalan ports. I then decided to do some tests and I found the following: a) The distance between the AC outlets used to plug the receiver and the transmiter affects the speed between them. The more the distance is, the slowest the connection is. b) To obtain optimum performance from the adapters, you should connect them directly to the AC outlets. They shouldn't be connected to the output of an UPS, AVR, or to a power strip with noise supression. Why? Because an UPS, AVR, and good quality power strips have filtering circuits which will severely degrade the signal produced by the powerline adapters causing a poor link between them or no link at all. This is very very important to take into account when using powerline adapters. c) The manufacturer recommends that the powerline adapters should be used in the same electrical circuit, same phase, same wire, same everything, in other words, between outlets controlled by the same circuit breaker; but I tested them plugging them between outlets connected by diferent circuit breakers and even different phases, and they still were able to stablish a link. The worst speed I got was when I connected them using two different circuits located at opposite phases, but even in that case I got a 27 Mbps link which is still workable. Seems that the key to success here is to plug them directly into the AC outlets. d) The highest speed I was able to get from the adapters was 480 Mbps, when a plugged them into the same AC outlet. Of course that was just a test because there is no sense in use the adapters that way. Again, the farther I went with the adapters, the slowest the link I got. e) Each powerline adapter has three indicators. There is one named "PL" which lits when the adapters have stablished a link. The user manual doesn't say a word about this, but the PL indicator lits either green or orange. Green means that the adapter was able to make a link of more than 100 Mbps, orange means that the link between the adapters is less than 100 Mbps and weak. f) In my case the stability of the connection is very good. No random disconnects. Considering what I bought the adapters for, I'm very pleased with them.

Review: TRENDnet500 Mbps Compact Powerline Ethernet AV Adaptor Kit (TPL-406E2K) First off, this product is a 10 star! Now my story if you care to know why I feel that way. I wanted to connect a desktop computer to my modem / router via Ethernet cable (was tired of the wireless hassles). With that hope, I ordered the TRENDnet 500 adapter kit. When I received the adapters, I first synced them together. Next, using the software on the shipped CD I created a network password for each. Lastly, I plugged one adapter to my modem / router and the other adapter to my desktop computer, both via Ethernet cable. From the start they worked! Was able to get onto Internet without any issues. And Ookla speed test showed 54Mbps DL and 12 UL (ISP provides 50 DL and 10 UL). Just as Trendnet claims... the adapters connect your devices to your router as though they were plugged together with nothing between. And because of the better than expected results, after about a month I ordered another adapter kit. This time, I connected the adapters to a Roku box and a Sony 3D Blue Ray Player. Again... everything working perfect! This time I synced each new adapter to the adapter that was plugged into the modem / router (rather than to each other). For context, my house was built in 2009 (age of house may impact product results) and my ISP is Xfinity Comcast (cable... not DSL). In addition, the distance from my modem / router to each device is approximately (again, distance across power lines may impact results)... Roku Box 35 feet Desktop Computer 20 feet 3D Blue Ray Player 15 feet I have had all four adapters now for only about three months. But in that short time, I have not lost Internet connection one time. And the speed tests on my desktop range from 45-55 Mbps DL and 8-12 Mbps UL. And all streaming on Roku Box and Sony 3D Blue Ray Player is in HD (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon). Lastly, because of the negative reviews I did an unscientific test to stress the adapters. Simultaneously, I steamed HD content on the Roku and Sony 3D Blue Ray Player and turned on the vacuum and hair dryer... then went to my desktop to run a speed test. Ookla results were 45Mbps DL and 10Mbps UL! Case closed... for me these adapters are worth twice their price. They have made me and my entire family happy campers (no more fighting about bandwidth / wireless connectivity issues). With the desktop and streaming devices all hardwired, our tablets and phones can now connect wirelessly without any hassles. Thank you Trendnet!

Ok first you all need to understand 500 Mbps = 62.5 MBps
Got it? That's why a 100MBps port makes perfect sense on these things. Now, for the actual product. Fantastic! I am getting great connections on most of them. There are some limits on the distance, but I think the key thing is they need to make it more PROMINENT that other everyday electrical stuff interferes with these. Like CFLs, which I thought everyone had been using for years - well everyone tech enough to be using these. Also, things like refridgerators and fans.... The point is these are things everyone is going to have they should let you know that there is no way you're going to get 62MBps... But I am getting 25MB on one and 40MB on another. I have 4 installed. And it certainly does better than wireless to get past obstructions in your house. I'm running one at the back of my main router connected to the wireless router. This one is in the center of the house, which means getting reception in the front and back or outside is very bad. So I used these to place another router at the front and back of the house that I'm using as access points. Works fantastic. And to top it all off I have one in a detached workshop that is about 100 feet behind my house! It only gets 10 MBps and that is from the one at the back of the house. I haven't used it to actually connect to anything yet though so I don't know if this will get me back to the router, I don't know if they piggyback like that yet. Overall, great product for when wireless just won't get you there and you don't have the option to run wired connections. And I'd give 5 stars if they were a little bit more forthcoming with the interference. When I turn on my garage or kitchen lights, both CFL arrays, my speed drops by 10% to 30%. Which after reading the manual I understand is normal, but would have liked to have known that before hand to look into other options. Although I still haven't found another alternative, it would have made me feel better to know before hand.

Plug-n-Play and work great BUT, you might consider coax
Plug these in and you got an instant ethernet connection. I was able to get between 5MB/sec and 15MB/sec depending on a number of factors. That being said, this was in a condo building with a lot of electrical signal noise so your results may vary. In any case, these tended to be much, much, much more reliable than wifi in our situation. They are very easy to setup and would be FAR easier than trying to get wifi to work in a larger building or perhaps if you live in an apartment or condo where there's TONS of radio interference from other routers. Also good for putting a wifi access point on another floor of your house. BIG THING TO NOTE: You MUST put these on the same "phase" in your electrical box as I believe I read someone else say. This means that to get any decent performance, you want the outlets to be on breakers that are on the same side of the box. Most boxes have two rows of breakers, so if say your outlets are on the left side, you're golden. If the outlets are controlled by breakers on the left and right side - you might have zero to severely degraded performance. YMMV. In my experiments, I did speed tests in the same room (outlet to outlet on the same circuit) and got the same results as living room to office (two different circuits, but same phase). ALL THAT BEING SAID: - YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER COAX adapters. These are adapters that like these, plug into an existing wiring system in your house (cable lines) and are generally faster and less finicky. They are a little more money though. So if you are looking for REALLY good speed on your local area network (say for media streaming from server in your office to the living room), then maybe coax is worth the extra coin. IF you're just expanding internet access or something, then these are good enough. As far as bandwidth, if your internet connection is slower than 50MBit (as advertised) then this will not add any speed penalty for you. Anything higher, it will. Most residences only have 1.5-30Mbit so you'll probably be just fine.

Inexpensive, easy to set up but getting full speed might require trying different outlets
The short version. At $35 for two, these are inexpensive. Basic set up couldn't be much easier. Plug one Powerline adapter into a wall outlet and connect to your router via supplied cable. Plug another into a wall outlet near the device you want to connect, plug in the supplied cable to the wall adapter and the device. In less than a minute it's connected to the internet. Want to add more? Just buy more and plug them in. I'm using four total,with three different streaming TV's are hooked up. TV's that used to annoyingly buffer streaming video over WiFi far to often - but now NEVER do. BUT - these are sensitive to line condition in the house and certain electrical devices. I was getting very slow speeds - 3-7 MBps - upon my initial set up. One of the electrical devices that create "noise" it turns out is AC to DC converters like for your cell phone charger. OR the AC adapter for your router and internet modem. When I moved the Powerline adapter that plugs into the router to plug in just four feet away, my speeds jumped up to my full speed of my cable internet (30 MBps) One might expect a microwave to create a problem. But small ac/dc adapters that only draw a few watts of power? Who would have guessed? So anyway, don't use the same outlet to power your modem, router or cell phone chargers that you use to power/ connect the first phoneline adapter to the router. Otherwise, as I said earlier these are ridiculously easily to set up. IF you live in a house, you can just use them as they come configured. If you live in an apartment, you should probably change the encryption so if your neighbor buys a set they aren't tapping into your network. As part of my troubleshooting trying to figure out the initial slow speeds achieved, I went to the Trendnet website where I found updated firmware which I installed on each device. Which required downloading and running the Trendnet utility for the device. Which also required downloading a plug in to work. BUT>>>> if I had only plugged my first Powerline Adapter into a different wall outlet, I would have never done all this. So don't be me. If they seem slow, move #1 Powerline adapter (the one connected to your router) to a different electrical outlet. Or for any adapter unplug any AC/DC adapters pluged into that electrical outlet. This may well require a longer Ethernet cable. I had a bunch so that was no problem. If you don't you'll have to buy a longer one. The supplied cable is maybe four foot long. When Powerline adapters first came out in 2001 I tried a pair and they were horrible. It's amazing how much better this product has become.

Don't even bother... inconsistent connection, bad technical support, and no disclaimer!
It's nice when it works, but some times, without warning, the network quality will drop off the face of the planet. The 500 Mbps is also a big lie, the Ethernet port on the device is only a 10/100. So you will NEVER see 500mbps. The fastest it could ever go is 100Mbps. week 1 I was going to make a youtube video about how great they were, but after the first week, I noticed the ping to the router was about 10ms (on wifi it's <1ms) no big deal. Week 2 started noticing network drops at random times of the day. never more then once or twice Week 3 Terrible connection quality, would work for 3-4 hours, then start flashing red and my speed would go too. for hours on end, I would not even be able to watch youtube, let alone play a game. I contacted tech support (had to sign up for an account) and I never got email notifications, I had to manually check the site manually, to check for a reply. They replied to my emails in about 29hours, and after trying there suggestions, such as dedicating an outlet to the adapter, and trying different outlets, they replied with this: 'Depending on the age of the wiring in your home or apartment, the devices that you have in your home, and the distance of the wiring. The adapters can have slower speeds, or dropped packets while communicating. The adapters are susceptible to any line noise or interference, and this can cause connectivity issues.' Well that would have been great to know before! basically, there is NO WAY TO KNOW if this will even work for you! then just linked me to a third party article, 'Five Ways To Boost Powerline Network Speed' that offers even more restrictions, and the only real suggestion, was: 'buy this discontinued product, that may or may not help' by this point, I could no longer return the item to amazon. so now, I'm out $40, had my time wasted, and have a pretty much useless device that only works 60% of the time at best. If they can admit, that there is a pretty big chance that it may not work in your home, and there's no way to know before you own it, they should have a DISCLAIMER! It's not like a normal item, where you could get a broken, or working one, this is an item that require your house to be wired a specific way. Wired how? WHO KNOWS?

Not Idiot-proof and No Instructions
I bought this to connect a wireless router in the living room to a smart TV in the bedroom of a one bedroom apartment since there was a ton of wireless interference from neighbors. There were no instructions included, not even a Quick Start guide. I found the User Guide online, and after plugging in module A to an outlet and the wireless router I plugged in module B into an adjacent outlet. Module A worked fine, with all three lights on. Module B only had the power light on. Following the instructions I pressed the synch button in Module A and then on Module B, each for 3 seconds. The lights went off/on on each but Module B seemed to not be connecting (just the single power light on). Thinking it might be that Module B needed to be connected to a device, I moved it to an outlet in the bedroom and connected the included Ethernet cable from Module B to the Smart TV. The Ethernet light now came on but the Data light stayed off and the TV did not sense any network. I tried the synch procedure again, as per online user manual, but could never get it to work. I gave up in frustration and returned it. In my opinion, if no instructions of any kind are included with a tech product it should just work. This product did not, and even with going the extra step of seeking out the manual online I could not get it to work. I have set up and tweaked settings in plenty of wireless routers and am fairly computer-savvy so this was a big disappointment. I gave it two stars since it's possible the product was not defective and I just didn't do enough troubleshooting to get it to work. Shame on Trendnet for not providing instructions for a product that is clearly not plug-and-play.

Easy to setup. Even comes with ethernet cables. Very pleased with results but needed to get creative to privatize.
Easy to setup up. I live in apartment complex with at least 40 WiFi networks within range competing for 2.4 GHZ band. I couldn't stream any video content due to traffic congestion. I installed PowerLine adapter so my Blu-Ray player is now hardwired via ethernet and electrical wiring in my apartment. No more hiccups, interference or problems because I am not using WiFi at all. I have dual band WiFi router and use the 5 GHz band with my Samsung Galaxy S4 cellphone and 10.1 Tablet 2014 edition. So I longer need the 2.4 band unless a guest comes with an IPhone or IPad. They only run on 2.4 band so too bad. They have to deal with traffic. To make your Powerline network private, you have to manually hold reset button on bottom of adapter for 3 seconds and then you have 2 minutes to do the same on all other adapters on network. This generates a random encrypted password for your PowerLine network. However, actually accomplishing this task is close to impossible. It must be done with adapters plugged into wall. It is very difficult to locate the reset button on the bottom blindly with the adapter just 6-8 inches above the floor. I just could not blindly find the tiny reset buttton. Maybe with a mirror underneath it would make it possible. I opted to change password using the TRENDnet utility. You must get the DPW printed on the back of each adapter and enter it into the TRENDnet utiliy before making the change. The lettering is extremely small on back of adapter and need magnifying glass to read it. I just took a close-up photo with my cell phone and could then read the DPW easily from the photo. Once you enter the DPW for each device into utility software, you can change the encrypted password for all the devices on your private PowerLine network simultaneously using the TRENDnet utility. Took a little creativity, but I successfully privatized my PowerLine network with custom password. I am getting 181 Mbps streaming video with my hardwired Blu-Ray player on PowerLine. Much better than trying to watch anything via WiFi on 2.4 GHz band. Finally able to enjoy Amazon and Netflix movies without buffering or sudden disconnect.

This works awesome!!
I am amazed with the functionality of this unit. I had reviewed a number of different "powerline" Ethernet solutions, and this unit fell around the middle with good reviews. The shipment arrived quickly ( PRIME reseller) I decided to try it out and I am over the moon with elation! If this is how all the TRENDnet products function, I think I will be considering them in the future for a lot of my requirements. This purchase has two adapters and two good quality Ethernet cables included. I use these within our home network. When testing the speed connection I lost a half a megabyte from when I tested directly from my modem, dropping from 62.5mbps, to 62mbps is not even noticeable. My house is approx. 1600 feet (multi-level) and the adapters are located at separate ends of the house. My house was built in the 60's and the electrical panel was updated 12-15 years ago. Extremely easy to install, no installation software required. This unit is a dream as I have now provided fast connectivity to a previously "dead" coverage in the house. I am going to start to do video reviews, so that the products I purchase can be demonstrated. I like helping people make the decision that is right for them. Only honest and personal reviews from me.

Realment eno he tenido problemas con ellos tengo aproximadamente 6 meses con ellos y sólamente una vez he tenido que desconectarlo para que hacer un reset. La velocidad la mantenienen constante pero obviamente son un poco más lentos que un cable directo pero lo suficiente rápidos para alimentar mi router, mi tv viendo 4k, mi sistema de seguridad de camaras y 2 a 3 dispositivos simultaneos.

Still working great after almost 2 years!
It was quick and easy to install. My internet modem/router is on the main floor of my house and my office is one floor above. With this device I was able to easily give my computer internet access without running long cables through the walls. I've been using it almost every day for almost 2 years and it has been working great 100% of the time. No issues at all. I would definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to get internet on a device that is too far from their modem to run cables. One thing I will say is that it does reduce my internet speed significantly, but it's still fast enough that I don't mind. My internet speed without the device is 180 Mbps and with the device is about 40 Mbps, so there is a 78% reduction is my internet speed. I used fast.com and checked it multiple times. Overall I would definitely recommend this product.

Pretty good, couple issues.
Didn't want to have to run a ton of cable from my second floor to my basement; these adapters fixed that problem really well. When my computer was connected wired I was getting 80mbps. With the adapter I get roughly 15mbps, which isn't bad for what I'm using it for. Only have two issues with it, which aren't major. When I first setup the adapters I had to mess around in the powerline utility on my computer to get them to recognize each other. Also, probably about once or twice a day my connection will drop for five or ten seconds. It comes back up really quick, so it's not a big deal, but kinda sucks when you're in the middle of a game. Would definitely recommend for people looking for a straight forward solution to getting a connection where your Wi-Fi just can't seem to reach.
