Q: Is the poaching tray metal or plastic?

It's a very hard plastic, very sturdy.

Q: I set the timer for 15 mins and it starts beeping after 5 mins. Eggs are not hard boiled. What am I doing wrong?

I've also not had this problem. I always put the timer between medium and hard and it works fine. Are you putting water in the bottom to the proper level? I might guess it would beep earlier if the water dissipates so as not to overheat/burn. Other than that, not sure what might be happening. You could try what Steven Miller suggests, and if not better, return it.

I've never double checked the timer but find the settings work fine. I use 16-17 mins for 7 large hard boiled eggs and they were perfect. I'd go with the timer setting and not worry about whether or not it times out perfectly. It's all about the final results...firm, golden yellow eggs and no green.

Q: How long does it take to poach eggs?

I have not used that feature yet. There is a setting on the base for "poach" so I think it can vary as you can see by the other 2 answers given. It probably varies according to personal preference. I use it mainly for hard boiled eggs and am 100% satisfied with the results.
