Isle of the Lost

As a child, it was hard not to breath a sigh of relief when the evil Disney villain was defeated. The Evil Queen, Jafar, Maleficent and many MANY more were completely awful to the characters the movies were focused on making us love and want to emulate. But, what if, after the happily ever after, the villains survived and were exiled to an island of their own? This is the basis for Melissa De La Cruz’ The Isle of the Lost : A Descendants novel. Mal remembers the party she wasn’t invited to as a child, and she remembers her mother, Maleficent, banishing Evie and her mother, the Evil Queen, away from the rest of the villains in exile on the Isle of the Lost. But it’s been over ten years, and a new year of school; Mal is ready to make her Mom proud and when she hears rumors of magic returning to the island via her mother’s scepter, she sets out, along with a few other teens to recover the artifact. No Matter What. It was great to read this story, and I am greatly anticipating the tv movie about the children of the villains. It was great to hear that Cruella De Ville, Jafar, and even Gaston had children, but part of me was wondering where the spouses were. Sure, the villains don’t get the happy ending, but how do kids happen on this island? There were also parallels to Auradon—the island where King Beast and Queen Belle live with other princes and princesses living closely in other regions of the country. I enjoyed reading the pieces of story that the Prince was given, especially considering he keeps dreaming of a purple-haired girl VERY similar to someone on the Isle of the Lost ( ::cough: Mal:Cough:: ). Melissa De La Cruz continues to write in a compelling way, and really tackles the ensemble cast well. While Mal was clearly the star, there were elements where Evie, Jay and Carlos were equally balanced and developed. De La Cruz also writes the converse of the Isle of the Lost, Auradon very well. I recommend this to young and old, go out and pick up your copy today (it came out on May 5th in hardcover) and, if we get enough sold, maybe we can get this to be a bigger series!

I can only think of one word to say about this book is WOW! Melissa de la Cruz has always been one of my favorite authors, especially after this book. Okay so probably the characters actually belong to Disney but with this book we understand the characters and how they become the way they seem like in the movie Descendants. Mal, the daughter of Maleficent (and her namesake) has always been trying to make her mom proud of her. But the one problem is that Maleficent doesn’t seem like she ever will be proud of her daughter. This is especially true in this little prequel book of the movie. Jay, the son of Jafar, doesn’t really seem like he is that evil in this book. He just wants to have a place that really makes him belong and with Mal, Evie, and Carlos he has found that. Even though he, much like Mal, doesn’t seem like he will ever make his dad proud of him. Evie, the daughter of Evil Queen, can be seen even in this book that she is quite smart and not as vain as her mom, which can be a good or a bad thing. Probably with Evil Queen she wouldn’t be proud of her daughter being smart and not focusing on her beauty. Though she along with the other two aren’t doing their parent’s justice/evil and that is something that every second generation villain wants to try and do. But also wanting to do something better than their parents as well. Carlos, the son of Cruella De Vil, is the youngest of the other three and is really trying to get more credit and love in his mom’s eyes but this is hard for him as his mom’s one true love isn’t him. Carlos is quite smart which is something that is needed in this little rag tag gang of “friends”. But like the first three he is also a disappointment to his mom. We also see a little bit of Auradon but not a lot since this book is mostly about the main four starting to become “friends”. This book is really good and I am giving it a five butterflies. I’m also happy to say that this book is good and now I can’t wait to watch the movie again and see if I like the movie even more now. 😀 I’m also hoping that there is another book!!! In the isle of the lost; its about the teens of maleficint ,evil queen, jafar and cruella di vill (am i spelling that right??).Mal is maleficints daughter and when she was 6 then this girl named evie evil queens daughter had a birthday party exept her. so mal tells her mom maleficing and maleficint banishes then from the island so they have to act like there not there.and stay hidden. then when evie comes to shool then mal throws a party and plays a trick on her.thn maleficint thinks that her dragon s eye septer had come alive ir something so mal evie jay carlos go to find it.i know im makeing it seem boring but its acually interesting. i love mal and i also want to know who mals dad is.ok so here are the pros and cons of this book PROS- funny cute characters that do interesting stuff i hate boring books adventure friendship CONS- used the word hell alot we dont use that word in this house i hated it when ben chaoter stuff of what ben was doing some bad examples of stuff kids shouldnt do well thats my opinion i read it a bunch its a great book really try a sample if you dout it

I've seen the movies, but the books are usually better. They were about the same. This is a prequel to the first movie.

When I saw Descendants, I decided it was one of my favorite Disney movies. I loved hearing what happened to all of the villains, beyond hearing that "they all lived happily ever after". I knew there was a prequel, but hadn't been able to get my hands on it before I saw Descendants. When I finally saw it on the Amazon bookstore, I bought it in a heartbeat. And I am very glad I did! The Isle Of The Lost offers background information to many things, some smaller things like where they go to school and other, bigger things like why in the world they left Maleficent's staff with her (they actually didn't). It also explained how Carlos, Evie, Mal, and Jay became friends, when friendship is so looked down upon on the Isle. I literally could not put this book down! I stayed up till one in the morning reading before I forced myself to go to sleep. My family was awakened by a tornado siren at 3 (don't worry, it was a false alarm) and I continued reading, this time unable to sleep and reading until I finished at 5. I really would recommend that anyone read this, especially if you love Disney movies and or Descendants. I'd even venture to recommend that if you haven't seen Descendants, you should read this first!

Great Neice loved it

My 7 year old got super hooked into Descendants and after binging them all this was a great way to hold her interest while also giving her something really meaty to read. She is a little young for this but loved that it reveals back and side stories on her favorite characters.

It takes a long time before you get to the actual story of the book, and those chapters were painful to read through, I found it very boring. But when you get through the first chapters and they actual story starts, it is really fun, and I hope the next book will just be fun. Since the description of the setting, describe the characters and place, and show the personality for the characters are done. That part could definitely have been written better, but if you're used to fantasy books with long explanations of just everything, the first part of the book will be "easy peacy." If not, we'll just remember it gets really fun after about 40% through the book. And those 40% is worth it, getting the next 60% of a really fun and interesting story. The book sets up the story, so the next books in the series have the potential to become amazing.

I found out about these books after the first Descendants movie came out and I read them all, in order when they came out at the local library. Then I found them years later and I read them all again. It is a must for any Disney fan and it is a wickedly fun book for any readers, who enjoyed the Descendants movies. It goes into a deep dive of what the characters motivations are and how their relationships with their parents drive them throughout the series. It is a fascinating start to a great series.
