Book well reorganized
This new edition has all the information about each species in the same page. The original edition had a set of color plates, so you would read the species description, and then have to flip pages to look at the color plates. The new one is a great improvement..

Excellent descriptions of mammals, but didn't see many mammals
This book has excellent and very detailed writeups and illustrations on mammals of Costa Rica. You can learn much about the creatures. I enjoyed the three-toed sloth, in particular. I rated it only 3 stars from a cost/benefit viewpoint -- we didn't see all that many species of mammals in Costa Rica, so in retrospect, I would have gone with the $10 tourist guide laminated foldout of all types of flora and fauna, and read up on what I saw afterwards, rather than carry this book in my pack.

Wonderfull text and usable drawings
I bought this while preparing for a two week nature travel to Costa Rica.At first glance I was a Little disappointed by the drawings. I have tons of illustrated nature guides and many of them with first class drawings, both informative and artistic. Theese drawings are just informative. Some of the Pictures look like they are a first attempt. But they are usefull and show the important details. The biggest surprise was the text. It is an engaging and very informative reading. You are guided through the history of animal immigration, evolution and adaptation to climate and geography. There are fascinating chapters introducing the different higher groups and amazing desciptions of the identification, behaviour, reproduction, ecological adaptations and protection status of the single species. This is one of the feew field guides where I have read every single Word. A field guide and a zoological textbook in one.Highly recommended.

Excellent ouvrage

The Mammals of Costa Rica
An exceptionally interesting part of the world, CR has no standing army, despite being surrounded by bristling military states. It has huge tracts of forest, and a climate that is suitable for a startling array of animal life. The heat and the insects would be enough for me to avoid going there, but I can at least enjoy studying the marvellous life forms that occupy the place. This is a brilliant guide.
