Dead West Review
Liked the easy natural flow - great chapter transitions. Just enjoyable to read. Thanks. I did not prefer the title or cover photo-lacks imagination- not a big deal though. Would recommend the whole series to anyone needing to relax and escape for a bit.

Love this writer and character
I was afraid I wouldn't like this story because it was moved out of the Minneapolis area and that setting is part of what I really like about this series. But the characters remained as quirky as ever and I enjoyed it immensely. Jameson White is one of my favorite parts of the story. He's just such a nice guy and he's not Scandinavian. The comments about the Minnesota Vikings crack me up - my brother is a big fan. I'm hoping for more books by Matt Goldman!

A good page-turning mystery
Another well-written mystery in which I was able to feel the emotions of the characters. The plot moved at a comfortable (steady) pace and kept me turning the pages. In the end, I was a bit disappointed in that two plot threads were not resolved. I hope to know more about two of the characters in the next book. Still a good book.

Delightful
"Dead West" is an entertaining sequel to the Nils Shapiro series. Set largely in LA, instead of Minnesota, it has a different, but equally authentic vibe. With a good story, satisfying plot, wonderful dialogue and characters; literate, delightful turns of phrase; a minimum of rough language; nothing viscerally repugnant; and good humor throughout, "Dead West" is a delightful read.

Excellent!
Very smart writing. Great plots and he brings the characters out in a way that you instantly relate to them. Love Shap’s humor!! Have read all four books and they keep getting better.

Up here with the best PI writers.
I devoured the four Nils Shapiro books in a week. Excellent descriptions, self-effacing narrator, delightful dialog, and an unusual LA setting for this usually Minneapolis-centered PI make this book a great read, up there with the best. You don’t have to read the four books in order, but if you only read one, read this one. Unexpectedly moving story.

"Hollywood is high school with money."
Shamus and Nero nominee Matt Goldman has written another winner. I absolutely loved it. Matt weaves a great mystery and has a deft touch with characters. Plus, as a Seinfeld writing alum, he knows Hollywood, and slides the rock off LA to expose all the crawly things without resorting to clichés. High recommendation.

Shapiro in LaLa Land.
Nils Shapiro leaves wintry Minnesota for the warm breezes and beautiful people of LA. Hollywood and its environs always makes a prime setting for crime fiction. As befits movie land, there are dubious deals afoot and Shapiro manages to position himself between some typecast heavies.Goldman uses his knowledge of LA to paint an all too plausible picture of what goes on before we see a movie. They say you should never see sausages or laws being made. I dare say you can add movies to the list.Shapiro is as sharp as ever and remains a very easy PI to spend your time with. The mix of characters strikes just the right balance between chancers, playmakers and those with veiled agendas. Tinseltown made for the perfect backdrop.
