Superior Variety of Lovely Patterns
I love sock yarn and I love fine knitting and sometimes I love projects that are fairly quick to complete. This wonderful book provides for all of these needs with a stunning array of projects that are actually useful. Socks are of course included, but so are gloves, mitts, scarves, shawls, a variety of baby projects and sweaters and bags. There are a few household item projects that aren't quite as inspiring and a pillow top could have been added with benefit but overall there are at least a dozen projects I want to knit in this book for myself and as gifts. There are even instructions for a small dog sweater! The instructions are clear and concise and include both basic and more advanced methods of construction - in addition to the great patterns, this book is a good skill builder. Yarn substitution is fairly easy with this book as well, as long as guages are carefully checked and information about the exact weight of the suggested yarn is carefully considered. I substituted yarns from my stash for both a scarf (not guage specific) and socks where guage is very important. I am thrilled that I have this book in my library and it is the best knitting book purchase I have made in a while. I know I will return to it for stash busting and even using up bits of left-over sock yarn. Recommended for all knitter's libraries.

Use up your sock yarn!
I have all the One-Skein Wonders books, but this is the only one using only sock yarn (although you could use any yarn you want if you get the correct gauge). Like the other books, there are colored photos of each project. The instructions are clear and most of the patterns also have a chart, which I like. I have made a few patterns in the book and found that there are quite a few errors. Go to Storey Publishing: Corrections, Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders to find all the errata in the book (I would suggest going to the errata page and printing it out before starting any projects from this book to keep from pulling your hair out; lol). This is a great way to use up your yarn stash! Most knitting or crochet books only have a few patterns and with 101 in this (and all the One-Skein Wonder books) there's plenty to choose from. It's a huge 287 page book and has an Appendix that explains all the different stitches and has abbreviations for them along with a symbol key for using charts and an Index so you can look up every project and every stitch. The first project I made from this book was The Celeste Shawl (cropped photo of the pink shawl) for my best childhood friend after she lost her sister. ;-( Then I made the Wisteria Arbor Shawl (photo with the multicolored yarn) and the Swan Shawl (photo with white yarn).

My new go-to knitting book
I don't know what it is about sock yarn, but I just can't stop buying it. Yet, I don't always want to knit socks with it and up until now I've had a hard time finding other things to make with it. The book does have quite a few sock patterns, but that doesn't bother me. Besides the socks, there are quite a few hat patterns, which I love - and even one in crochet. That will be great for quickly using up some yarn. There are shawlettes, which I really don't care for, but they seem to be pretty popular right now. There are several nice scarf patterns and a few neck warmers. I've already made one called Motorcycle Mama's Neck Warmer and I absolutely love it. It's just a plain ribbed neck warmer and it fits perfectly and keeps my neck nice and warm while walking our dogs. There are some baby clothes patterns which are probably perfect for sock yarn, some nice bag patterns and a few ornaments and things for the house. A very nice variety of things to make with mostly one ball of sock yarn.

Some unique ideas
Overall I love this book. There really are so many lovely patterns included. There are some I don't like of course, but many of them are lovely. There are a number of sock patterns included which is a little disappointing since the whole premise of this book is that sock yarn can be used to make things other than socks. Also, though this is a mostly knit book be aware there are patterns that utilize both knit and crochet as well as some all crochet pieces. The book is divided into 4 categories - From Head To Toe (and Fingers Too), It's A Wrap!, Knits For Kids and Bag It and More. Each section has about 24 patterns included. So there is a pretty decent variety of items included though I will say personally I wish the section for kids (babies, really) was a bit shorter... we don't all have babies to knit for. But I suppose those who DO have babies in their lives would appreciate the number of items included in that section.

got a sock yarn stash and tired of making socks? get this book
Sock yarn is so pretty. It comes in wonderful colors. It is often relatively inexpensive and tempting to buy a single skeins of sock yarn at one's LYS (local yarn store) and at STITCHES conventions (I never miss STITCHES WEST-- <3 it!). Sock yarn is irresistible. But sometimes one gets tired of making socks. Not everyone is delighted or appreciative of receiving hand knit socks (some people were never taught by their mamas about not looking gift horses in the mouth-- tsk, tsk). There are lots of really interesting patterns in this book for things OTHER than socks. Lots of excuses to not restrain oneself from adding to that stash of sock yarn when you see some really fantastic yarn.I haven't tried any yet since I just got the book yesterday so I cannot comment on instructions within but the variety of patterns is very intriguing and there are a lot of them to choose from. There are only 4 patterns for doll clothes. I wish there had been more patterns for clothes for dolls and stuffed animals (mine wear clothes, don't yours?).

Sock Yarn One Skein Wonders
Besides many practical ways to use one skein of sock yarn, the strength of this book comes in how it is organized. It is grouped in chapters for shawls, or mittens or hats, etc. The photos are beside the instructions instead of being in one section. The spine of the book is even colour coded to help find a chapter. The patterns are fun and attractive.

Best of the series so far!
I've bought/been given/borrowed all the books in the "one Skein Wonders" series, and this is the best of the bunch! The editor and publisher have obviously taken criticisms of previous books on board, and the book is now in full colour throughout, with pictures of the projects now actually with the instructions instead of a section at the front. The quality of the pictures has improved too. The majority of projects are knitted but there are a sprinkling of crochet projects too.The book is arranged by project type, and there is a wide selection of designs to choose from - socks, obviously but also shawls, hats, gloves, bags, baby clothes, clothes for dolls (probably the only things I won't knit) and items for the home. Because items are all made using 100g or less of sock yarn, they are ideal stash busters. By being made from a weight of yarn easily available to UK knitters, the book is more useful than some US-centric knitting books, too.A slight criticism is that the book doesn't give actual yarn usage for each project, so it's harder to calculate whether that odd skein in the stash will actually stretch to finishing a project.A useful addition to my library. There's only so many pairs of socks a girl can have, but sock yarn is just so tempting...
