Consistently the best coffee everyday
Our grind and brew machine died on us and so we started using a French press and/or Areo press. Both options worked fine, but I like to make a pot in the morning so my wife can have a cup, and I can take the rest to work in a thermos. I started watching reviews on drip coffee makers and came across this unit. Everything about it was appealing. -THE LOOK- Aesthetically, it's stunning. Timeless, classic look. It's very clean, the textured finish looks very durable, doesn't finger print, and the color choices are excellent. (I wanted the pistachio color but once I pulled the trigger couldn't wait for it to be shipped so opted for my second choice). While brewing it looks neat as the water bubbles up the center column and into the outlet. -THE BREWING OPTIONS- Very basic controls, but the half pot select allows you to not only brew a half pot, but modifies blooming duration. From there the sky is the limit with grind options and strength without all the buttons and programming. It's also pretty fast- full pot in 6 minutes. -THE TASTE- I've had it 5 days and have made 7-8 pots... It's the best tasting coffee (obviously the beans, grind and everything can make the difference... but when I have a Tim Hortons or Starbucks it's just not the same) and I drink black coffee. -THE DESIGN- If it ain't broke... this design has been around for 50 years and is hand made in the Netherlands and comes with a 5 year warranty. It's not ground breaking but that's the point. Keep it simple. Quality parts, copper heating element, and separate elements for water heating and the carafe. The removable water outlet arm is a nice touch if it gets a fingerprint on it or if your need to clean- simply pop off. -THE PRICE- Ok, so this is super expensive for "just a coffee brewer" but personally I'd rather spend big money on a quality piece that has service able parts, rather than a machine 1/3 the price that may only last 2-4 years. This is a lifetime machine if cared for. Personally I drink at least 3 large black coffees/ day. Starbucks dark roast black is $4.00 CAD. It'll pay for itself in no time. -THE ONLY NEGATIVE- The glass carafe seems really fragile and thin. I'm paranoid it will break. I do not allow anyone to operate my machine as I'm scared they wouldn't be as careful as I when I rinse it. So if you buy pre ground coffee and want an easy pot of coffee, or like to grind fresh and experiment in grams per liter, ground size etc... but must have the best- buy this.

I love the design, the ease of use, the clear water container which is a nice change from the interior one on my previous machines, and most of all, the coffee. This machine is simple. It’s very easy to see the exactly how much water you’re pouring in. There’s an on/off switch, and a selector switch which sets the brewing cycle, either for more or less than a half pot. The brew time is a bit slower when you select half pot or less, and the hot plate will turn off automatically a bit sooner. You can use this setting even when you make more than half a pot. I use a fairly coarse grind (coarser than grocery store ground coffee). This works well for me. Moccamaster includes a chart that shows water to coffee ratios for various amounts, based both on number of scoops with the included scoop, and grams. I find their recommendations based on grams to give better results, but you can adjust the amount of coffee to find what’s best for you. There is no timer, no clock, no lights or buttons aside from the two I’ve described, and the simplicity of the machine is part of its appeal. I’ve read some criticisms of the way the water is distributed over the ground coffee, and with a full pot, this may be something to watch. The spray arm doesn’t extend across the full diameter of the basket, so about 30 seconds after brewing starts, I use a spoon to stir the coffee grounds a bit to make sure they all get wet. But this isn’t necessary and I only do it because I think it produces a better cup of coffee. All of the coffee grounds will get wet without this step, but some won’t get as much time to “bloom”. I haven’t run a cleaning and descaling cycle yet, but the products for this are less expensive than for my previous machine. Some people don’t like the plastic parts, but they’ve been fine for me. This machine is made in the Netherlands and comes with a 5-year guarantee. Moccamaster sells replacement parts (carafe, plastic parts, spray wand, etc) at reasonable prices, too. I was lucky to get my candy apple red model on sale (about $80 off), so check for sale prices before you pay full retail, but it’s worth it I even at full price. EDITED to add: Rinsing the filter after you place it in the basket, then dumping out the water, will remove most of the paper taste from the filter, and it will also help the water to distribute farther and more evenly during brewing. It’s a fast, easy step, and it *is* included in the instructions, but somehow I missed it until I watched a YouTube video talking about the best brewing technique for the Moccamaster.

Amazing coffee machine and brews fast.
Makes excellent coffee and brews so fast! Also looks really great on the counter top. If I had to give one negative it would be that the burner doesn't stay on that long. Not a huge deal if you only ever want really fresh coffee but sometimes I want a cup a little later and wish I would have had the room on my counter for the thermal carafe version. So if you think you might be in that boat definitely go for the thermal carafe. Some people might say that the pieces feel cheap for the price but it keeps them nice and light and I haven't run into any issues with them.
