The owl sits on a log, so overall with the log the sculpture is roughly 9 3/4". The owl itself is roughly 8" from the top of its head to its feet, but the bottom-most wing feather extends below the feet another inch or so, therefore measuring from the lowest part of the owl to the top of its head it is roughly 9". I'm not sure why one person answered "between 10 and 18 inches," but that is not correct.

He, or she, is 9-3/4 inches tall, and is better looking in person, or owl.

Q: Has anyone used this outdoors and how well does it hold up?

I used it outside for awhile and then brought it inside. Held up great. I would advise not to leave it in the sun as it will fade but it is so pretty that I have it inside now.

Q: Does the base have a hole to put this on a post outside to deter birds?

No hole on the bottom. You could use an adhesive though. It works somewhat to deter birds, but I find that the moving shiny things work better. Birds eventually figure out that the owls don’t move. I still love these I. My garden for their charm if nothing more.
