As a parent who home educates my son, I have found that every time I receive a workbook by CGP they are invaluable.We constantly find ourselves referring back to the books to help solve problems that my son may be struggling with.The books run alongside the national curriculum so they enable me to support him in staying on task for what is expected of him to know.The books are written in clear text enabling my son to read the pages unaided and learn independently, they also give me an idea of topics we need to work on.The books are set out with both text and images which makes them child friendly.The bonus is the answer pages at the back of the books.

CGP is a brand I know and trust for producing quality workbooks that are appropriately challenging. This is another example.Clear answers are provided at the back of the book for self-marking or even parent intervention. I like the opening pages of ‘How to use this book’ as they are written in an engaging and entertaining way. Clear guidance explains how the topics are structured, question types and details required.Topics cover both reading and writing including: poetry, comparing texts, fiction and non-fiction writing, writing skills. Questions get progressively harder through the topics, helping to build confidence. Extracts vary in length, type and topic. The harder ones reach an entire page, helping to prepare students for eventual GCSE material.I like the emphasis on practising analysing structure in a text. In my experience in the classroom, this is what students find most difficult, so any early intervention is always a bonus. I think both the writing and reading sections are very strong and explore all the core skills for English.This is a great way to help prepare students for what is to come at GCSE level, regardless of exam board or core texts. All key skills are explored in an engaging manner in this good, quality workbook. Highly recommended.

New KS3 English Year 9 Targeted Workbook (with answers) (CGP KS3 English)This English workbook is excellent in supporting my son’s school learning.This workbook is so well written, clear and easy to understand.My son is able to dip in and out of it as needed. He feels that if there is a particular topic that he’s struggling with, he can use the book to support this by reviewing it again, studying the tips and looking at the sample answers section. He can do this at home and at a comfortable speed for him. This he finds is empowering, enabling and confidence building.This book also helps us as parents to support him, if needed, by using the book together.I like the fact that these workbooks are aligned to the national curriculum.My son has shown this book to his friends and they have asked their to buy them a copy.An exceptional English workbook and great value for money.I can highly recommend this whole series.

At Key Stages 1 and 2, the National Curriculum for English is fairly clear-cut and easy to understand. At Key Stage 3, the year-on-year progression gets rather more nebulous, for both children and parents. This book should help to provide some structure for them, and also to fill the gap if you feel your child isn’t getting enough of the right sort of homework.The book is up to the usual CGP standard, covering all topics in the curriculum and giving fairly comprehensive explanations of the answers. It falls down in one respect, particularly on the Writing topics: many of the explanations would be more suitable in a mark scheme for teachers. You can’t expect a Year 9 child to decide whether they have met the target of “any reasonable answer”, even when accompanied by a model answer, and some parents may struggle with assessing this too. However, this book is as good an aid as you’re likely to find. Good value.

This Key Stage Three English workbook by CGP is perfect if you want something extra for your child to work on in between set homework.My son has a timed routine (this sounds strict but the structure has helped him immensely) every night 6.30pm to 7.30pm he does his homework. If he has no homework set he uses workbooks to help develop a broader knowledge of subjects and increase the practice of skills required for his GCSEs. This workbook is perfect for those times he self manages revision. He can chose a section to work on that he either feels like doing or is relevant to his current studies and work through that.This workbook is well made, is easy to understand, is structured so that you can do bite size revision and it’s affordable at only £4.35 (Nov 2021). I have no hesitation in recommending this workbook I find it value for money and a great support to learning.
