do these cover the ball of the foot?

Depends on how long your toes are. I have stubby toes and this covers the ball of my feet about halfway. They do stretch quite a bit so you could maybe training to cover more. Also I have found that if you do strenuous exercise, sometimes these can twist up into the front of the shoe.
