Q: Do you have to purchase the v grip attachment for this to work or will it work with out buying the attachment?

it works just fine without the grip. I just find i have better control of rhe paint nozzle when it is connected

Q: will this fit the new rust-o-leum larger spray nozzles?

I see why not. If it is a spray can, it should fit.
