I have these hanging on my house as well as on a pole, they are cute and draw the birds nicely. I have used sunflower, safflower and plain wild bird seed in these little feeding balls and all three work fine...I imagine if you hang them and just put wild bird seed mix in it you will see an assortment of birds visiting...good luck!:)

I have cardinals, other finches and small birds on this feeder all day. I use black oil sunflower seed. I also use Coles Flaming Squirrel Seed Sauce on my bird seed, and the squirrels won’t touch the feeders any more.

Q: does anyone know the size of the mesh feeder holes? would like to add a perch for my cardinals that want to perch as they feed.

Yes they can perch on them. But a squirrel managed to actually steal them and drag them away. He got the tops off, which I thought was impossible. I found the balls under our bushes.
