So how does the new version differ from the old version?

I have the older version and bought this newer version as a gift. The only difference I seen was the shape. The older one seems more rectangular while the newer is more of a rounded rectangle.

Can potatoes be shredded with this grater?

It will shred potatos but only holds maybe 1 or 2 potatos in the bin at a time. I also found it does make a bit of a mess due to the starch. Ive never used the fine plate but the bigger grate and the slicer work well. Good for smaller batches I found a hard time getting the guard to stay in a potato with out holding the base and pushing down pretty firmly.
