Fluval Multi-Chamber Holding and Breeding Box, Large | Up To 3 Separate Housing Compartments

This breeding and holding box has been a fantastic addition to my aquarium setup! I really like having the option to create up to three separate compartments, which makes it incredibly versatile for isolating fish, protecting fry, or keeping smaller fish safely separated. The large size provides plenty of room without taking up excessive space in the tank, and the multi-chamber design makes managing multiple fish much easier. It feels sturdy, well-designed, and practical for breeding and quarantine needs. Definitely a great addition for any fish keeper who breeds or needs a reliable way to separate fish. So I've bred peacock gudgeons and hatched most of the eggs within this container. It was attached to its own little 5 gallon tank with a HOB with carbon and extra sponge for proper filtration, keeping nitrate and nitrite at 0 despite the several-times-a-day feedings. The box definitely has potential to turn your fry container into a fry washing machine, little guys get tumbled around from the flow. The little adjuster on the airline itself did nothing for me, so I had mine hooked up to the system of my rack that let me change airflow directly from the pump. Had to lower that a decent chunk, otherwise the water flow was simply too strong. Even with that, I put some aquarium sponge on a little skewer and placed it right under the water output to catch most of the impact. I also added a piece of sponge on the outflow, because the little grate it comes with is just too big. My little fry kept escaping. I eventually learned that my fry are even small enough to go into and through the damn sponge I put in there, so I had to use something finer (which clogged easier). I also added some floaters and java moss to help with both filtration and hiding space for my little buggers. Unless you have fry that's too big to go through the little grate you definitely will need modifications. But besides all that, it's a fantastic option for hatching eggs and raising fry. My little guys are by now big enough to swim in the 5g freely while growing a little more without risk of ending up in the HOB. Given how well this entire setup worked for me I'll be getting more in the future. I've yet to try it for egg scatterers along with the one item from I believe penplax for automatic egg-harvesting, but I'll get there. And for that I'll need another one! I definitely can recommend it. It kept all my fry in a small space meaning I could give them more accurate feedings, and hook it up to its own tank to have a big water volume for great parameters. Amazing!

It came with no instructions, but it was pretty easy to figure out. The only thing I had trouble with trying to figure out is those two tabs that go underneath where it hooks onto the tank as seen in the photo I took in between the tank and the box underneath. Still don't fully understand the purpose of those two tabs. But it's whatever it may be. Right now it's on the back of a 29 gallon. It's a great box to breed fish in, put their eggs in, act as a holding tank, or even use as a specimen container if ur looking to sell fish or examine them! And if ur wondering what those two little rubber things are, they're the clips to hold the top down if u have any aquatic friends that like to jump or escape. I see a lot of people say they have gargling or sputtering issues with the set, but mine came with a cap the has another hole on the side and I just put it on there end of the intake tube on the inside and it's as silent as can be. At least for my ears. So if urs came with a clear cap that has a hole on the side of it, stick it in there and see what it does for urs. So for the lack of instructions for everything that come with it, i give it 4 out of 5. Otherwise if it had instructions to come with it, i give it 5 out of 5! Great box!!! Definitely recommend! Oh! The air pump I have that's running it is a 3W 2 outlet adjustable air pump for the stone and the intake. Works really good! Good flow! The 2 air flow control valves, the 2 check valves, and the stone with the suction cup all came with the air pump I ordered separately with this. The purple artificial plants I ordered separately as well. I figured it'd be good to put those in to help them feel safer and hopefully be able to see them better as they move around. Also provide more surface for bio film and beneficial bacteria to grow on. I would've put real plants in but hornwort tends to grow pretty fast and it's hard to see those little white babies swim around in them. Hah So I put a small dwarf water lettuce in there instead to see how it goes. But anyways, hopefully this review will help those who are thinking about getting one of these. In my personal opinion, don't hesitate to get this because it's so versatile and u can use it for so many things other than just breeding. It's a great thing to have in ur arsenal as a fish keeper/breeder and I think everybody should have them especially if they're just starting out in the hobby. Have a nice day!!

I have to be honest: when I opened the box, saw what felt like one million tiny plastic pieces, and realized I was expected to assemble this thing myself, I was instantly overwhelmed. Maybe I was just in a mood. Maybe I had already exceeded my daily allowance of minor inconveniences. Either way, I was not emotionally prepared to open the box and find a tiny 3-D plastic jigsaw puzzle with its own plumbing. Thankfully, the instructions were clear, everything fit together properly, and I was able to assemble it without much difficulty. Was I cheerful about it? No. Was it actually hard? Also no. I was simply being dramatic. Once assembled, though, I was genuinely impressed. This box is extremely well engineered and feels sturdy and well made. It includes a bottom insert that can be used to allow fry to drop beneath it and remain separated from the parents. It also comes with two divider panels, so the box can be configured into as many as three separate chambers. I am not currently using the bottom insert or the dividers, but I appreciate having those options. There is also an additional grate that helps prevent tiny fry from escaping through the outlet and returning to the main tank, where they would presumably discover that life is cruel. One of my favorite features is the adjustable water-flow control. Water slowly drips into the box and then flows back into the aquarium, providing continuous circulation without turning the enclosure into a tiny aquatic water park. The flow can be adjusted to a very slow, gentle rate, which is ideal for fry or other delicate inhabitants. One important thing to know is that an air pump is required to operate the continuous water-flow system, and the pump is sold separately. Fluval does make that clear, so it was not an unpleasant surprise, but make sure you already have a compatible air pump or purchase one along with the box. Without it, you will not be able to use the slow, adjustable circulation feature, which is one of the best things about this setup. I am actually using mine to house and breed California blackworms rather than fish fry, and it works perfectly for that purpose. I placed a shallow layer of gravel directly in the bottom of the box without using the bottom insert. The worms remain completely separated from the rest of the aquarium while still receiving fresh, filtered, continuously circulated water. The holding box also stays comparatively clean, which is impressive considering blackworms are not exactly known for respecting housekeeping standards. Overall, this is a thoughtfully designed, versatile, and highly functional breeding and holding box. It does exactly what I hoped it would do and gives me far more control than a basic breeder net or container. 10/10, absolutely recommend… even though assembly is required. (It really was not difficult. I simply needed a moment to process the betrayal.)

Years ago, I had a fish give birth only to have the fry get IMMEDIATELEY eaten by its mother. I was so sad and disappointed. I new I had to get a "Breeder Box". I got a super cheap one that just sits inside the tank. I mainly used it to let the fry mature a little bit before getting moved back into the main tank, or help heal a fish that was getting bullied recover its strength before rejoining his friends. After many months of tryin to find out why some fish that I put in there died immediately. I came to the conclusion that the water flow in this box was so so poor that all of the waste was being stored in the box and there was not adequate oxygen getting into the box through the small slits on the sides. Then I found the Fluval Multi-Chamber holding and breeding box and holy cow, what a difference. It incredibly easy and intuitive to set up, and is absolutely the perfect size for almost any application. Even on relatively small tank like a 10 gal. Currently, I have a Molly with a fin injury in one compartment, and the other 2/3rds of the tank are housing her baby fry. The room that I keep one of my tanks in, which currently has the Fluval box on in, gets very cold at night, 60-61 degrees. I was worried that since it hangs off the front and is just plastic that the temp in the box would lower drastically. I am happy to report that the temperature did not budge from the main tank temp with no additional heaters or anything, i have a 50w and a 25 w heater in the tank, but I'm confident that you could be perfectly fine with just one 25 or 50W depending on the ambient temperature of the room. The only thing i would be mindful of, is trying to keep super small fry (I'm talking 1-2 days old) in the left portion of the tank. I had a single fry get pressed up against the grate the flows back into the tank. I don't know if he was sick or weak, or if the current got him, but in thousands of fry run through this box, I've only had a single loss. so my best practice, if you don't need the whole box, is to partition off the far right slot, put your fish in the left and put the drain with the bigger slats in the outflow spot on the right. That allows more water to flow through the box and greatly decreases build up of debris (if you're like me and have a heavy hand when it comes to feeding fry. The only problem with this box is that I don't have one for all of my tanks!

I really like this breeder box. We used to have one that sat in the tank and you would have to manually pour water into it to clean it. I really like how this one keeps the water clean on its own. I bought the large breeder box to house five baby pea puffers while I wait for my other tank to finish cycling. I saw a lot of people complaining about it being loud, but I don’t think it’s loud at all. It’s made out of very sturdy plastic and I like how it can be adjusted to fit different size tanks. The instructions aren’t great, but if you look at the pictures, you can figure it out.

Seemed like a good idea, but the fry went right through all the strainers and right into my main tank. Worked great to isolate the mother, though.

I bought one of these for my angelfish breeding. I have some pairs that throw a percentage of albino fry and could never manage to get any of the albinos to survive until I tried one of these breeding boxes. Now, I am getting unbelievably high survival rates with my albino fry! I now have three of these and a fourth one is on it's way! And they are very affordable. I can't say enough good about these boxes. They really simplify raising fry. They are VERY easy to clean and maintain. They can be used not only as breeding/fry boxes, but also as slow-drip acclamation devices, isolation tanks for stressed or "bullied" fish, and great holding tanks for taking pictures of your fish, and the added benefit of having the stability of the larger tank that the box is hanging on is priceless. To do a water change for your fry, simply do a water change in the main tank, and you never even have to move the fish in the box or worry about them during water changes. As I mentioned already the price is fair, not too expensive at all. The instructions were simple and the design is brilliant. The only cons I guess I can think of are that you can't use a top for the tank they are hanging on unless you devise a custom top that can fit around the part that hangs over the front of the tank. The other thing is that they come with tow "grates" that cover the overflow, one with small gaps for smaller fry, and one with larger gaps for once the fry are grown out a little. The problem with the grate covers with angelfish is that even with the smaller gapped grate, fry can squeeze through and get washed back into the main tank. To remedy this I bought some foam sponge from hobby lobby and cut small squares to replace the grate for the first week or so until the fry are too big to fit through the gaps. You will want to cut the foam sponge pieces to fit snugly but not tightly enough to restrict too much water flow otherwise you can overflow the box and wash some fry back into the tank that way. With a little adjusting of the trickle and just the right size sponge block, you can keep the fry in the box no problem. As great as these are I can't justify taking away a star for that little issue. If it weren't for these breeder boxes I wouldn't be able to raise the albinos... at least not without quitting my job and tending to them full time!

I have tried different types of breeding boxes and I consider Fluval holding and breeding box the best among them. It has everything that you need for an aquarium hobbyist. The size is very convenient comparing to others while I wish if Fluval can make a bigger size also. This is a complete set and you won't regret buying it. I highly recommend it.

This has made my guppy breeding experience so much easier. It was very hard to remove fry from the traditional mesh breeding boxes. Plus the material itself would grow algae, get a dirty oil film on top and was difficult to clean. It also was difficult to remain attached with cheap suction cups. This external breeding box is amazing! Can see more clearly, feed them with ease, i can clean mess from bottom of box with a turkey baster, without disrupting the fry and it just tops itself up. It is easy to net the babies out once they are old enough for the community tank. And so easy to feed multiple times a day for younger fry - as you only have to turn off the air pump, rather than all the filtration too. This has been one of my best fish keeping investments!
