From the New York Times bestselling author of House of Eve โa 2023 Reeseโs Book Club Pick! * A Best Book of the Year by NPR and Christian Science Monitor* Called โwholly engrossingโ by New York Times bestselling author Kathleen Grissom, this โfully immersiveโ (Lisa Wingate, #1 bestselling author of Before We Were Yours ) story follows an enslaved woman forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia. Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her motherโs position as the estateโs medicine woman and cherished by the Masterโs sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. Sheโd been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devilโs Half Acre, a jail in Richmond, Virginia, where the enslaved are broken, tortured, and sold every day. There, Pheby is exposed not just to her Jailerโs cruelty but also to his contradictions. To survive, Pheby will have to outwit him, and she soon faces the ultimate sacrifice. Review: Too good and emotional to put into words - I usually write my reviews right away, but this book was just too good to put into words. Iโve savored it. It took me longer to read because of the heartaching feelings while reading parts. I even looked up about it and saw it was based on a true story. Or the character was based on a real person. Iโve known all my life slavery was bad but some stuff I never knew. And for some idiotic reason, I thought women may have been spared some of the really bad stuff. But omgosh, I canโt even imagine what they went through. How could anyone treat another human like that? Sorry to rant. Iโm so thankful for this book and author. And the way it was written is superb. Never have I had so much feeling in a read. And itโs not even the genre I usually read. I have a major book hangover now. Itโs been weeks and I just canโt get into others as much. I want to read this one over, itโs so good and I pine over already finishing it. The characters are so amazing. I loved it so much, I bought the audiobook so I could listen while I worked. The narration was something not to be missed. Even if you donโt like audiobooks, try this one because the narration brings it alive even more. This should be required reading for all high schoolers! Review: Fictional Facts. - This book was an easy read. It can be very graphic and upsetting but a lot of it came from true events that took place. Although fictional characters a lot was based on truth and characters that the author researched. I love how she talks about how she came up with the story and research in the back of the book. This book is genius storytelling. It has a really good visual on the pain endured upon slaves and how sometimes u have to do whatever it takes to survive even putting your pride aside. This is a love story told in a unique way. I got lost in Pheby Delores Brown (main character). I put myself in her shoes and asked could I really do what she did and make the sacrifices she did to survive. As a mom. Absolutely! As someone of a high yellow complexion I wonder would I have Been in her position and had to endure what she did. I hear people make jokes about how as a light skinned African America I would be a house worker back in the day which people say is better than being in the fields, but is it. I also learned that there was a difference with slaves living in the city vs being on a plantation. At the end of the day a slave was still a slave and there were moments where u are reminded of that no matter how much better one think their situation is. These characters are definitely memorable. And the author has a fascinating way of captivating an audience. I just ordered more from this artist. (The darkest child).

Memorable
The slave trade in the US was brutal and unforgiving and Johnson brings it to life with particular sensitivity. This isn't a book for the squeamish but it's an important story, one that shouldn't be forgotten.

Outstanding book and author
I am an avid reader and about once a decade I come across an extraordinary book. Much less often, I find an an amazing author. This is an extraordinary book written by an amazing author. Incredibly well written, fast-paced, and completely engrossing. I have found that to be the case for every book Iโve read by this author. Her storytelling skills are truly remarkable. I cannot recommend her enough or adequately articulate how much I admire her books.

Great historical fiction
I absolutely enjoyed the read. I inhaled it in 1.5 days. Sadeqa is a gifted writer. It tells the true harshness of slavery, regardless of gender or skin color. This was hard to read at times but the story is golden.

Good Historical Fiction Book!
This book is a good read! It was hard for me to put the book down. There are some parts that are not easy to read based on the nature of the events and incidents in the book, but still, itโs a good historical fiction book.

A very nice bookโฆ
I liked this book very much. I learned from how much black people were hurt and still are. The struggle to survive must be seen in the context of history.
