One step forward, one back
The original Railroad Tycoon was the first game for the IBM PC that I ever bought, and I played it enthusiastically. This is a worthy successor. I miss a few things from the original, however. Signals were nice, and true to life. Installing numerous signals along heavily traveled track would help trains run faster because they were excluded from shorter stretches. Train crashes would occur only if a bridge were washed out before you could set a signal to stop approaching trains; or if you over-rode a signal too boldly. In this version, train breakdowns and crashes become a major annoyance, seem to occur virtually at random, and there is little you can do to prevent them. I miss the ability to define mixed consists. You must either let the AI determine what a train will haul (which usually works well), or schedule it to haul only a single kind of cargo from a station. Technically, there is a strange problem with perusing businesses in the annual report. If the list runs over a few pages, the CPU is taxed to the point where the game can freeze. C'mon, guys, any database manager can deal with thousands of records without batting an eye. This is just sloppy coding and inadequate testing. But otherwise, I like the game and will look for a later version, hoping that the last problem, at least, has been corrected.

Game play is very diff FM RT2
Definitely different from RT2. A bit of a learning curve. The "SANDBOX MODE" seems a good idea but I found it a waste. Yes, you don't have to worry about money but the game results are nonsense: troops coming out of corn fields, iron ore from logging camps, etc. Better to use the "BAILOUT" cheat and get logical results while learning how to make money.

Best train game ever.
This game kept me interested from beginning to end! Highly addictive. Even though I have completed and won (over the years) every sinario and situation, I just keep playing. I am a model railroader in transition and no place to set up a layout so this game is a great substitute in the meanwhile.I like everything about this game except that when I changed computers it seems the patch does not or could not be reloaded, and as a result, I have to put up with very slow travel between the water tower and maintenance building and also some times when almost to the end of the game the game freezes.I would recommend this game to everyone...that being said, I can see where a gamer who spends hours and hours playing games might find this game limited. But for us average Joes or Janes it is a very excellent game.

Create a railroad empire with Railroad Tycoon 3
Railroad Tycoon 3 (RT3) is a improved sequel to RT2. The graphics and topography are excellent. When laying track a grid can be overlaid, which gives you an idea of the elevations. This allows you to keep expenses down and improve travel speed by avoiding steep slopes when laying new track. The visuals of the camera moving with the locomtoives and trains and the accompanying sounds are very entertaining. The financial/operational details of the industries and businesses in the cities, towns, and countryside is very informative and important. Building a railroad is a challenge, that provides some insight into the financial considerations necessary for successful operations. If you just want to put down tracks and run trains, then there is a "sand box" mode. Just put down your track, order locomotives and cars, then let them go.The only negative I found occurs when a train enters a station, meets another train, or enters a repair site, it dissolves into a ghost-like apparition. Other than that TR3 will provide hours and hours of entertainment and educational fun.
