Q: Do these get hot when in direct sunlight (when used outdoors)?

I have these inside in my dining room but I have 4 windows and I haven’t experienced them getting hot at all.

Q: Are these more of a matte or shiny material?

These chairs are more satin or matte finish.

Q: are the backs comfortable for dining?

They are surprisingly comfortable. Not too reclined, not too straight backed. I mean, they probably aren't as comfortable as cushioned seats. But we've gotten so many compliments on the looks and comfortability or ours! I will say, the bars on the sides or the back attach to the sides of the stool bottom and not the back of the stool (if that makes sense) so I'd assume that if someone larger or wider were sitting in them, the bars might be a little bothersome on the hips..
