Disappointing
I don't usually bother to review books on Amazon, but this was so bad that I had to warn others. I wanted to read this because I liked Poyer's As the Wolf Loves Winter so much. But while that is a well-plotted crime novel with plausible characters and a great sense of place, this is none of those things. The chief villain seems right out of Trumpist propaganda, a college professor who goes to the woods to kill hunters after his son (whom he barely knows) is killed in an apparent hunting accident. His adversary is a very old man who has no apparent stake in the events except that he figures out that the professor is a killer. These two traipse for days through the woods during a blizzard, because, you know, college professors and old men are great at surviving under these conditions. There is a twist at the end, but it's not enough of a payoff for this silly set up.
