Q: Why not just use a tarp?

Im confused by your question since this is a tarp, however ill do my best to assume what you were intending to ask is what are the benefits of this rain fly to other rain flys. I have used diamond rain flys, hex rain flys, rain flys with the door mod, and after a good weather check ive opted to go no rain fly. The benefits to this rain fly is that it gives privacy for changing and what not. Cons to this tarp however is that its heavy and not really long enough for any hammocker thats ridgeline is longer than 110 inches. My 12 foot hammock sticks out the ends but my 11 is pretty much at max length. So pending on your hammock length and if you are using a ridgeline would determine if this is beneficial. I have also used this at cub camp as shade for my cubs.

The Rain Fly is designed more for protection from the natural elements such as rain, wind, and sun. While it will naturally keep bugs away to some degree by virtue of covering a lot of space over your tent or hammock, it is not a bug net by creation.
