does this work on 220 volts 50hz ?

NO! We bought it in the USA and used it in POLAND, it shuts down with catastrophic results, DO NOT USE IT WITH 220 V SOCKET, ONLY 120

how is the plug configured?

The plug sticks out about 3/4" from the wall and the cable drops down and to the right so it does not block an outlet above or below it.

Does this unit have an on-off switch?

Yes, it is next to where the cord connects to the body of the unit.

We have an old house with outlets with only two slots. No space for the third prong. Will I be able to use this?

No, it won't work with 2-prong outlets. The missing third prong is the grounding conductor. The surge protection function can't work of the outlet isn't properly connected to a grounding conductor. IF your old house is wired with BX cable (the type where the wires are enclosed in a flexible metal sheath), you may be able to install the surge protector to use the BX cable sheath as the grounding conductor. But check with an electrician. There are multiple types of metal armored cable, and they do not all allow using the armored sheath as a grounding conductor.
