Q: How exactly do these work? Would it work for my kitchen trash cabinet?

You screw it into the bottem corner of the door. It really just depends on how thick the wood is on the cabinet. It pretty heavy duty so I want to say the screws were around 1/2 inch long. I could be mistaken. We install one these on a solid oak door at restaurant I work at over two years ago and it works great.
