Good for benchtop or installed cable testing. Toss it in a hard case with a few gender adapters.
This tester quickly made me forget several other inexpensive hand-held testers I already had. The variety of connectors is outstanding for a tester at this price point. The individual indicator lights for each wire in a multi-wire cable is really useful. Plus it has a simple set of banana jacks for test leads to allow testing any cable which isn't already supported by dedicated connectors. I have a lot of different hobbies which all involve wiring or cables of some sort. I bought this so I could carry a single more professional quality tester instead of three different cheaper hand-held testers. It has been great in that role, but I did add a few things to make it work for every situation I needed. If you are like me, you may need to gender adapters to test some specific cables. In addition to the test probe leads, I also picked up two additional sets of test leads with alligator clips and micro-clips on the ends. Getting those items were an extra expense, but even with that expense, this tester is a bargain compared to many others costing two to ten times as much with mostly similar capabilities. The extra bits I added increased my satisfaction with this tester, but added more to carry, too. For me, how you pack up all of this to carry with you makes a big difference in your satisfaction, too. To make all of this easier to carry, I picked up a waterproof hard shell case super cheap from my local "harbor." The inside had customizable foam to protect and hold things in place. I put this cable tester, the three sets of test leads I wanted, as well as four different gender changer adapters, and two extra sets of batteries into the case. I pulled out some of the foam to make form-fitted spots for each item inside the case. A big waterproof label on the outside of the case was the last touch. This setup gives me an easy to carry "grab-and-go" test setup that is amazingly flexible in what it can do. I highly recommend doing the same with the one you buy! Five stars!

Must-have
Other than the fact that it's bulky, this cable tester necessary to have on any show. It's solidly built and well-designed. The biggest selling point for me is that it does split. So, if you have cables that are already run, you can still test it. Even better, if you are on a show where your longest unused cable is too short, you can test it for continuity even if part of it has already been run. It's also the easiest way for me to test my run if I've needed to patch into the house. PROS: - solid build - able to test multiple types of cables - visually see if you wires are straight-through or twisted pairs - versatile CONS: - bulky - heavy

Tank tester.
Does exactly what it’s supposed to rain or shine. I’ve shot dirt out of it with compressed air a few times and it’s still accurate.

Robust Professional Tester
Robust construction and well thought out. Love that the tester can be split to a separate send and receive, which allows the user to “remote” the ends for testing longer lines or installed cables. Including a protective case would’ve been a nice thing, but alas I had a small Pelican case that’ll work for that. I’m always concerned about the BNC and RCA connectors that feel exposed on the sides and the small switches on the face as well. The included test leads can then have a home as well, within the case. A previous review I’d read on this tester stated that it can only test 5 pin DMX?! DMX 5 pin is the professional standard however 3 pin DMX is often used in more “DJ” oriented gear (wether or not it’s true DMX Cable vs. just microphone cable depends on cable spec/design). This tester can test 3 pin XLR as well, thus can also test 3 pin DMX. We like this tester so much we’ve ordered a second unit. :)

great for testing audio cables
Good for testing all kinds of audio cable. will also test cross platform, 1/4' TRS to XLR, 3.5mm TRS to RCA etc. It comes apart, so you can have one half on stage and one half in the sound booth. Audio out is good for testing sound systems

Installers required tool
Just what the Dr ordered if you're an A-V installer- a versatile tool allowing for easy testing of stand-alone cables & one of the few testers out there that has a "remote" for testing those cables installed "in the wall" where the other end is on the other side of the building group on the Catwalk.

It's a genuine, DBX brand professional product, so it works exactly as it should and has the quality you'd expect from DBX. Only complaint is that the method of joining and separating the 2 parts is finicky, and a padded pouch or zip case would have been nice to protect it a bit in the toolbox.

Bastante robusto. Un poco pesado para ser herramienta para llevar con uno mismo en mochila de trabajo. Pero la construccion y funcionamente es heavy duty

Functions exactly as advertised

Very robust. Haven't tried every connection to test, but the ability to split for installed wiring is very good. Heavy, but that comes with something built out of metal. Is about size of a good thick book.
