RENAISSANCE is a breakthrough sci-fi thriller for a new millennium. Dare to enter a bold vision of the future in the tradition of BLADE RUNNER and SIN CITY - drenched with state-of-the art animation and a gripping story. It's 2054 Paris and the city lives in the shadow of corporate giant, Avalon, which sells the irresistible promise of "ageless beauty." The sudden kidnapping of a gifted young scientist draws a tough-as-nails cop into a twisted underworld of corporate espionage, genetic research and organized crime. Featuring the stellar voice talents of Daniel Craig (CASINO ROYALE), Jonathan Pryce (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Trilogy) and Ian Holm (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy).

Region locked movie
The Ascot Elite blu ray is region locked area B (non USA.) It does have English language track for the movie. You should try to get the Miramax version of the blu ray if you are region A.

Amazing film done in a very cool style.
There really isn't anything I don't like about the film. It's a unique style, it's black and white, science fiction, mystery and has a great cast, (early Daniel Craig for one).

Amazing visuals, though plot could be better
As I hoped, the visual style of the movie was breathtaking--not only the black/white effects, but also the architectural setting and interior design, the camera angles and shadows. The visuals worked perfectly to create the emotional environment of a cyberpunk drama. The plot kept up the pace, but only barely so. I found it too dark, lacking in depth, higher emotions, and sophistication. It was no match for Gattaca's (my token of sci-fi/cyberpunk perfection).Though it is easy for some to concentrate on the deficiencies of the plot, it provides an adequate backdrop for the visuals. The visuals carry emotional meaning and in some ways compensate for the deficiencies of the plot. Renaissance definitely broke new, exciting ground visually, and for that it is exceedingly noteworthy.

Good even on rewatch
I've watched this about 3 times and looking forward to the 4th. Good story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Groundbreaking...worth checking out again and again
This film is amazing. At times the technology seems to trump the story. The story is nothing we haven't heard before, but enjoyable none the less. Much more of the actors performance is conveyed through the movie than I had expected. But above all it's the look and feel of new Paris and the future that the makers of this film really nail. This movie is not to be at all confused with Sin City or the Richard Linklater movies Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. This is definetly its own beast and needs to be recognized as an amazing breakthrough piece of work. worth checking out again and again.

Five stars for visual brilliance
Based on the reviews I read when this movie came out, I expected it to be an interesting technological oddity with gimmicky visuals.I was stunned, then, when I finally rented the DVD, to see how brilliant the visuals really are. Much was made (curiously) in the film's publicity about the way it was rendered in "pure black & white", when in fact, the filmmakers have used shades of grey (as well as an incredible level of precise detail) to give the images depth and to keep the viewer's eyes from getting fatigued. Take a look at the customer images on this movie's Amazon page for examples. The result is one of the most visually sumptuous films I've ever seen. While the overall atmosphere is dark, there are enough "well-lit" scenes to provide variety. The design and execution of the visuals are among the most original and stimulating uses of computer animation I've ever seen. After watching it once as a rental, it was a no-brainer to buy a copy for myself for any time I need a little brainless eye-candy.The story is a standard issue crime/sci-fi thriller, but this film is worth five stars just for its visual brilliance alone.

An Ideal Future Noir Film!
This is one of those films that for whatever reason got buried & overshadowed because of it's somewhat experimental approach at conceptually artistic cinematography. These kind of films are almost always polarizing, you either love them or hate them. I would put this film in a category with other films from the same time period when directors were really experimenting with effects & treatments to film that were way outside the box. Films like A Scanner Darkly & Sin City. The plot itself is a mystery of sorts, set in a Sci-Fi future. They use a lot of severe angles, and first person narrative - giving it a strong Noir, orNeo-Noir feel. And just a heads up, it was originally recorded in French. If you can find one dubbed in English, I would recommend it so you can focus a little more on the visuals of the film.As for the DVD itself, it came in perfect condition. Thank You!

Well I do like certain selected CGI movies
Well I do like certain selected CGI movies, and decided to try this type in black & white. The story was good, but slow, and Daniel Craigs performance was also good as the voice dubbed cop, but It would have been better in color. Although the overall graphic designs of the futuristic version of Paris were well drawn as a background set, it was really hard to make out a lot of the details being in black & white. Too many deep shadows. I had to adjust the dvd zoom to enhance some scenes.
