I thought they were trend indicators.

Q: Who can explain the set up procedure much more clearly than on the card accompanying the thermometer? Specifically, the symbol appearances.

The idea is that you place the actual thermometer body INSIDE of the house, while the extension and probe go OUTSIDE of the house. The top 'in' temperature is measured exactly where they display unit is located; the 'bottom or 'OUT' temperature is wherever and what ever the probe is located. Fish Tank use? IN is room air temperature, OUT is the water body that you dropped the probe in. Other helpful tips: The probe is made from plastic that is compatible for PVC pipe solvent. I use it to measure solar swimming pool heater temperature gain by drilling the appropriate sized hole for a TIGHT fit, and PVC cementing it right in. Keep in mind, the probe is tapered; hole must fit the tip, not the end. Make hole EVER SO SLIGHTLY larger (wiggle drill bit slightly) until the entire probe goes in. Keep in mind that glue in it's liquid state is a lubricant; hole can be really tight.
