The train definitely comes off the track...it is screwed in bit removable. I don't believe that you can connect other trains...hope this helps :)

Do the wheels roll well and are they sturdy enough for a 2.5 year old to play with?

The wheels roll good, but if the car is pressed down upon, it doesn't roll as well. The car is very sturdy, good quality, but would be concerned about a toddler possibly being able to remove wheels. I gave the car to my grandson who was 6 at the time, don't have it or I would test it out for you.

Is the train numbered or lettered with a particular train line?

The set comes with stickers to choose your own line.

Does it fit into Thomas the train wooden track ?
