Q: What hardness are the pencils. I don't see it listed anywhere

Set includes 2 pencils each in 6 degrees of hardness: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B and 9B. Non-toxic. Set of 12.

Q: How are these pencils in comparison to cretacolor or generals brands?

Haven't used the cretacolors but having used very similar pencils I imagine neither are as good as these. When in hand you can just feel their quality. No scratchy clay or impure graphite problems here. Just smooth sailing :)

Q: So these smudge/smear easily? I'm left handed and am looking for pencils that don't smear too easily if I happen to run my hand across the drawing.

Easily? Not so much, they are pretty hard in density, and make clean strokes and lines. I would say the hardness is about a solid B drawing pencil. A good tip/hack for artists would be to use a spare sheet of paper to prevent smudging on your hand, and off from the drawing. Hope my comment answered your concerns. Happy arting, Raevyn77!

Q: Do you need to use a pencil holder with these woodless pencils? Are they good for portraits?

They are good for portraits and I don't use a holder - it is not like a raw stick of graphite so it doesn't get on your fingers. It has a "shell" to keep your fingers clean, if that's what you mean.
