Perhaps the most comprehensive book on the subject
There has been a plethora of botanical art instruction books published over the last few years, many of which I have purchased, and most of very good quality. Some cover specific media while others are more general. For instance, Botanical Illustration from Life by Isik Guner is probably one of the best recent books, and is just beautiful. But Botanical Art Techniques: A Comprehensive Guide (etc.) is a definitive work covering all media in much detail. There are tutorials from over 50 artists. It is beautifully presented and lavishly illustrated. I'm not sure how many of the other books in this genre I will retain, but I doubt that I would need to refer to any of them now that I have this volume. It is a true benchmark title in the field.

Wow
I have been using graphite and coloured pencils for a few years. Saw this book and thought it would be a good addition. How wrong I was, throw the others away, this is so full of help and experience the others fall away in comparison. So if u wish to draw or paint buy this first. As the lessons can be applied to what ever u draw. It's 400 pages and I bought a good used copy. It looks brand new. Buy it learn, enjoy and learn again.

COLLEGE LEVEL BOTANICAL ART INSTRUCTION
There are soooo many things to like, let me just mention one tiny thing that was omitted: there is no mention of brands except pan pastel. I think however this was a strategic decision. It is well known that Europeans prefer Fabercastell whereas USA colored pencils users lean toward wax based pencils such as prismacolor. I guess the omission of brands allows artists to concentrate more on the content of the subject matter. An experienced colored pencil artist can recognize some of the brands by the shape of the pencils. Everything else about the book is over the top wonderful. This book is for serious artists. If you have never done this art, you can get a great foundation if you start at the beginning. If you have no materials at all, you could spend the first year doing just graphite. As you see by the table of contents, many many techniques are explored here. For me with experience, I found there are still new areas for me to explore. The degree of detailed explanations is over the top! If your dream was to go to get a botanical art degree in an expensive college and you are stuck at home, this book will put you way ahead of the competition. The last book I reviewed, The Complete Book of Fruits and Vegetables is a wonderful coffee table book of exquisite watercolors, but there is no instruction. With this book, Botanical Art Techniques, you might be on your way to producing finished pieces as in the latter book.
