All-new Wolverine By Tom Taylor Omnibus

The book is a a great take on the new Wolverine. The writing is fun and engaging and keeps you guessing. The art is also excellent.

First off, I enjoyed this omnibus, but my correction of the title in my Header is what I think it should of been called... Wolverine is not a basketball jersey, putting on a Chicago Bulls #23 does not make you Michael Jordan. This isn't Grayson donning the Cowl of Batman while Bruce Wayne is missing so Gotham City knew Batman was still about. Logan/ Wolverine is pretty unique and iconic so Laura calling herself Wolverine just does not sit well with me--and a lot of others. The character in and of herself is good enough to stand on her own, and she could of, but this was Marvel Comics swap/replace phase in the 2010s, so here we are. I picked this up because I have enjoyed Tom Taylor's work on Injustice--which I own both Omnibuses of--and because I like X-23 as a character. The art and the coloring are not the best--for me, personally-- but Tom's story telling keeps you engaged. On the book itself, a typical Marvel omni that is well bound due to the thinner paper they use over DC, so the binding is what you'd expect--great. It is a smaller Omni compared to others about, however. And the inner covers under the dust jacket are fantastic and both could/should of been the cover itself. I do recommend this omnibus if you are a fan of X-23/ Laura Kinney. Not in my top 50 Omni's or anything, but a good collection none the less! Grab it if you can! A quick and big thanks to Amazon for shipping this so it arrived about 10 hours after I bought/ordered it the previous day. Book was it top condition, as well. Cheers.

Like I said in my World War Hulk II review, All-New, All-Different Marvel promised to bring new and exciting changes to the Marvel Universe as it was at the time but few of the series lived up to that hype. As with Totally Awesome Hulk mentioned before, All-New Wolverine was one of those few. Now thanks to this omnibus I've been able to read through the entire series again, and I think I appreciate it even more this time through. Writer Tom Taylor really knows Laura Kinney's history as a character, something I only delved into after reading the series the first time through the X-23 Complete Collections, and he uses it to bring her into her own as a different kind of Wolverine. The series is about both honoring the legacy of the first Wolverine but also forging one's own path as the new version and it's an all around well done effort. Taylor's dialogue is snappy and very fluid to read. He introduces many new and exciting concepts to the Marvel Universe including, in my opinion, one of the best new characters of the last few years. You'll see what I mean. There are a lot of great artists who worked on the series but of them all my favorite is Jaunn Cabal. His style is so incredibly detailed. There is also a cover gallery at the back of the collection but fair warning mine ended up with a printing error which created a crease across two of those pages. I can't speak as to how well remembered this series is even for a few years ago but it was a really creative and exciting book and one I'm happy to own. 5/5

Tom Taylor has a sense of storytelling, alright. This is a very fun read, with proper pay-off. The various twists and turns are worthwhile. Every step of the way is earned. Nothing reads as tossed in for the sake of tossing it in... Laura Kinney feels like a real person, less like a caricature or imitation. Taylor's writing is cohesive throughout, even if the artists change rather often. Each new artist brings their own take, without veering too far from the core style. While the artist may change every few issues, there is a similar style put forth, creating some sense of unity. None of the characters have drastic changes in their appearance, unlike some other books... There's a bit of a time jump, going into the last few issues/chapters (should be the last 2 or 3, iirc). It works. The story feels like it ends properly, like it's the right thing to do, like the ending is earned and worthwhile. This is a great book to have in any comic collection. It's light, without losing its emotional weight, the stakes build, the greater Marvel canon is intertwined without feeling shoved into the reader's face - it's just a great read.
