Ernest Hemingway never wished to be widely known as a poet. He concentrated on writing short stories and novels, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1956. But his poetry deserves close attention, if only because it is so revealing. Through verse he expressed anger and disgust-at Dorothy Parker and Edmund Wilson, among others. He parodied the poems and sensibilities of Rudyard Kipling, Joyce Kilmer, Robert Graves, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Gertrude Stein. He recast parts of poems by the likes of Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, giving them his own twist. And he invested these poems with the preoccupations of his novels: sex and desire, battle and aftermath, cats, gin, and bullfights. Nowhere is his delight in drubbing snobs and overrefined writers more apparent. In this revised edition of the Complete Poems, the editor, Nicholas Gerogiannis, offers here an afterword assessing the influence of the collection, first published in 1979, and an updated bibliography. Readers will be particularly interested in the addition of "Critical Intelligence," a poem written soon after Hemingway's divorce from his first wife in 1927. Nicholas Gerogiannis, a professor in the Department of International Studies at Auburn University, introduces the poems and clarifies historical and literary references in explanatory notes. The revised edition of Ernest Hemingway's complete poems was indeed very well edited by Nicholas Gerogiannis. Clearly divided into four parts plus an index, the collection starts with the early poems and goes on chronologically. No matter how one judges the poetic ability of one of the masters of the American short story, this collection of poems should be a must for all students of American Literature. In addition to the poems, a choice of quite amusing photos and of some typed and even hand-written scripts is shown in the book. Many helpful explanatory notes plus a list of quite useful book titles makes the book very good value indeed. For its high quality both in text, and additional material, this book clearly deserves five out of five stars.

I had not realised he wrote poetry too. Very impressive.

oh dear
as a long time Hemingway admirer I had to pick this up, this moneymaking excuse reminescent of Cobain's Journals. really this is just a bunch of notes, a collection of scribbles of imaginist nonsense, with only later work from the gut worth reading, but you'll probably find this somewhere else and far cheaper. it's surprising the amount of swearing in Hemingway's so-called poems, not that I mind, it actually adds some kind of interest. you can imagine what his novels would be like if editors hadn't interfered as much. if you're looking for socially conscious gutsy poems pick up some d.h. lawrence poetry, and judge Hemingway on his prose, not these casual scribbles intended for profit.

Hemingway didn't write much poetry, but I've read all his novels & short stories so I'm eager to enjoy this slim little volume as well.

Although more noted for his prose, Hemingway also used poetry to find expression which many of his works do admirably.

Hemingway's Poetry Gains Critical Recognition
Including Hemingway's poems in his literary canon is essential in providing a complete portrait of one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. While Hemingway's poetry will never eclipse his fiction writing, serious consideration should be afforded to his poetics in terms of both influence and development. A standard and reliable compilation of Hemingway's poems is important for the growth of scholarship in this area. This revised edition fits the bill.
