Raja's Pet Camel: The Magic of Hope

This heart-warming picture book is a story of friendship between a boy and his baby camel. Raja wants to keep the camel, but he has to find a way to convince his dad. The camel is so mischievous that the adults are unhappy with his clumsy habits and a large appetite for dates. Raja's faith and friendship come through in the end. The illustrations are quite lovely. The story charms in its bright and colorful location of the Indian desert. There is much to learn and gain from this lovely debut picture book by Anita Amin

This story and wonderful illustrations make a wonderful addition to a home or school library, and I especially recommend it for the classroom because of the introduction of a universal story in a unique setting! This sweet story is about a boy named Raja who wants to keep his pet camel! You can imagine some of the mischief that follows!

A sweet story about the bond between a little boy (Raja) and a camel (Kamal). The illustrations are expressive and colorful, almost like a Pixar movie. The sensory details, especially when father, son, and camel travel to the fair, really bring the sounds and flavors of the setting alive. Back matter provides more context on the deserts of India.

When Raja falls in love with a rambunctious baby camel, Kamal, he devises a plan to keep his new pet once his father decides Kamal must be sold at the fair. The suspense builds as Kamal seems determined to thwart Raja's plan at every turn. Will Raja's father allow Kamal to be sold? Raja maintains hope enough for us all throughout this rollicking tale.

I got this to go with my study of Asia in my Montessori class. It is a cute story, takes place in India and any child could relate to it. Nice pictures as well. Good for 6 and under I would say.

My girls and I love to read this adorable book with beautifully illustrated pictures! The facts about the Thar Dessert in India are an added bonus; I always love when we can learn about other cultures together.
