Loved it!
This is #5 in the series, and does a terrific job of developing the characters while keeping the reader guessing on what twist will assail us next. The descriptions immerse and transport me into this other world.

Damsel in distress
Another book were the MC is functionally useless. Another book with a female lead that is supposed to be powerful but is ultimately weak in all the ways that matter. She spends the entirely of the book denying herself and wallowing in self doubt. Her powers are too great to actually be used. None of the magic system is elaborated on. The author just uses words like “runes and alchemy” but you hardly see it in action and the little actual magic you see just happens. You didn’t get to delve into the wonder of a well fleshed out magic system at all. To make it all worst she falls in love with another guy, mind you in the middle of fighting demons and killing people. Why can’t we get amazing female led books that don’t rely on them falling in love all the time? This is now the second guy in a relatively short time when we clearly have other things to be thinking about. Her useless physical/magical prowess combined with a weak mental fortitude make her boring and whinny to read about.

Awesome Quicksilver Court
I can hardly wait the next installment! Don't you hate reaching the end of a series book only to have to wait for the next episode? This is a "difficult to set aside series."

In a whisper
Easy to read and follow. I liked the way each demon was presented with a different personality. I especially liked the eavesdropping scene and the gifts Severin demonstrates. This book is great for older female tweens, teens, and young adults. This book would be a great holiday stocking stuffer.

Satisfying Action and Surprises
I loved the first book and it felt like forever waiting for this one. I was not disappointed! Caruso writes a complex and enthralling story that teases at so much more to come! I’m excited for Book 3.

A Satisfying Sequel
This is the second series by Melissa Caruso set in a fantasy world mainly ruled by a empire based on Renaissance era Italy , the Raverran Empire, which was the heart of the Authors first series her “Swords and fire “series, mainly this Empire had mages controlled by a institution known as the rookery whose officers known as falconers would bind themselves to mages in order to bring there gifts under control, their enemies and rivals who were more similar to the Celts and the Gauls on the other hand were ruled by powerful semi immortal mages known as Witch Lords.Set long after the original series this follows Ryxander the Grand daughter of a Witch lord the ancient enemies of the Raverran empire a complicated series of events in book one and a damaged gift of magic that was spiralling out of control saw Ryxander ally herself with the Rookery in order to save both herself and her country. You don’t need to have read the original trilogy to understand and enjoy this series though you definitely need to have read book one of this series at least. The 2nd book in the rooks and ruin series this is another enjoyable entry with quirky likeable characters a fairly inclusive cast with whispers being a particular delight, and while there’s real stakes and a good bit of peril the book is filled with a lot of heart and like the first book the story revolves nearly as much around Ryx ander making friends and forging relationships for the first time as it does world ending events. As the fall out from book one continues Ryx finds herself exiled from the only home she has ever known, New locales bring new friends and opens up the world building beyond the Empire and Witch lords, the ensemble cast Is a delight and Ryxander aherself while troubled is a engaging and likeable protagonist, suffering from a curse whereby her touch drains the life from others her alliance with the rookery allows her the chance to interact with others in a way that was never possible before. This is feel good fantasy but not particularly light hearted danger a bounds but if you want something well written and a long way from Grim Dark or Gritty fantasy while still having some stakes then this is is the way to go it emphasis intrigue a lot more then action though it still has its moments more then the first book , the one flaw it has is may be to humanise the antagonists ( especially the demons ) a bit too much a bit more mystery and menace would have done wonders but overall this was a strong sequel to a excellent first book.

Brilliant follow up to “The Obsidian Tower”
Struggled to put this down. The second book in a trilogy can sometimes feel a bit disappointing, a lead up to the grand finale. This didn’t, it was a good story in its own right, developed the characters so that you really start to care about them and has set the third book up nicely. Don’t want to wait too long for it!
