Insightful!
In this book, Newberry describes in detail how he builds a collection of wonderful pastels. Newberry's descriptions help the reader understand the magical elements which make his work absolutely stunning to the eye. He describes in detail the what, where why and how of his color choices and it is therefore very insightful. Further, it is very nicely written and intelligently structured. Next to being an outstanding painter and I am pretty sure we will be seeing his work hanging in museums one day, Newberry is a very talented writer. His prose is as engaging and evocative as his paintings. I am looking forward to reading his other books.

Read this book and open your eyes to a new way of seeing color.
Here’s a painting a did. I’m doing some studies following Michael’s color theory, which has to do with color of light and shadows, color of atmosphere, and color of the thing you are painting. This is Green 12”x12”. There’s something wonderful about this approach to painting: you get a beautiful harmony of color and your painting has a very modern feel. It truly transforms the scene. After reading Michael’s book over and over and putting his Color Theory to practice I can look at the work of one of my favorite artists, Vincent Van Gogh, with fresh new eyes and deeper admiration of his genius.

This is a must-have book for visual artists!
I devoured this in one sitting... the imagery is both illuminating and fascinating, though the real joy of this book (and the theory presented) is the specific narration by the author. His obvious passion and expertise shine through brilliantly! A must-have for any painter.

Color Theory in Practice
Michael Newberry is a talented artist with fascinating insights into color theory. In "Newberry Color Theory," the author uses 16 pastel drawings to explain how he creates and combines color to create feelings and mood. It's a wonderful journey to witness color through an artist's eyes. This book is a must read for artists who wish to understand the meaning and theory of color.

Very Informative
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about complementary color theory.

Bach for artists
I can’t say that as yet I fully understand the details of Newberry’s theory, presented here in this crisp wee volume, but its idea and systematisation reads a little like an equivalent in colour theory to Bach’s pioneering integration of musical tones — and where Bach has 24 pieces for his Well-Tempered Clavier (each piece exploring the possibilities of a particular scale) Newberry offers us 16 shimmering pastels, each exploring a dramatically different way to present light, shadows, spatial depth and entities themselves, and each of them (like each of Bach’s pieces) creating a different emotional mood thereby.Philosopher Leonard Peikoff has likened the field of philosophy to a skyscraper, on which aesthetics sits up above it all offering us a “helicopter view” of the whole structure and of our place within it. With this book, and its precise focus on our means of visual perception, Newberry offers an implicit case in this exploration that painting also occupies one of the floors occupied by epistemology (i.e., the theory of knowledge, and how we acquire it). Perhaps there will be a few epistemologers who recognise that, and build on it — as we hope that painted will. Let us hope so!If I had any quibbles, it would only be to grumble that the pastels themselves could be larger (perhaps we can hope for a deluxe version later, with the full-size pastels on full-colour artist’s paper!?) And perhaps to wonder about the want of a diagram or two as a visual summary of the theory. But then Bach never drew diagrams either. And we do have those evocative pastels to pore over.So that’s just carping. Newberry has set out strongly down a new path here, and he (and this publication) must be applauded. It deserves wide success — and many successful reprints.

Great tool for artists and wonderful demonstrations
I first ran across the wave series on Facebook and was interested in the color and light theories Micheal Newberry was sharing. This book takes both the theory and application to a whole different level. A very well explained and demonstrated way to think about using color light and atmosphere in any subject........highly recommend
