Rookie Read about Science: So That's How the Moon changes shape Paperback – 1 March 1992

Toddlers seem to always be into the moon! This simply worded book helps introduce why the moon looks different all the time. I first bought it for my grandson years ago, but have purchased it over and over again for other kids. I even give it with other books at baby showers!

The fact that this book was written with children and OAPs in mind has made it a hit in our family. A good start for young people to learn about the sky and its contents.

Our 2 year old loves the moon! And she loves this book. The book and its pictures are pretty old so don’t expect some high def ones. It’s a quick read that teaches something and that holds our toddlers attention.

My 2-year-old son is obsessed with the moon and is confused as to why it changes its appearance. I think this book will help my son get used to the fact that the moon changes. I especially liked the chart on page 27 that shows 16 days in the moon's cycle so you can see how it changes over time. I does not do a very good job of explaining HOW we see different phases and the diagram shown was not necessarily helpful (unless the child is able to visualize themselves looking at the moon from the surface of the Earth to see the different phases.) If you want something for an older child buy "the Moon Book" by Gail Gibbons as that does a fabulous job in the images of getting kids to understand how our perspective makes the moon's phases.Overall, I think its a good book for what it is and appropriate for very young children. My 2-year old has me read it to him over and over and over again nodding in delight. I would not try to read this to the entire class though because the book is rather small.

I used this book for the first time this year to assist my first graders with understanding the moon's phases. The simple text and fantastic pictures are great for my young readers. I will be ordering more copies for next year and have asked our media specialist to get one for our school.
