Great book on masculinity, literature & popular culture
Richardson's book is really impressive. It links together southern studies, African American studies, and literary analysis, and gender studies. It moves from film to novels to speeches to rap songs and asks the reader to take seriously the different kind of cultural work each object offers. Richardson explores how U.S. southern identity throughout the twentieth century is imagined in negative ways and how that idea has helped to shape the presentation of African American male identity in art. The book will be useful to researchers working in a number of different academic fields. More importantly, it is highly accessible and will be an enjoyable read for anyone inside or outside a university setting.

An Informative Book
I felt that I learned a good deal after reading this book. I found this book in a university library and decided to give it a read. I didn't know, at the time, that there had been (or, still is) a debate about black masculinity differences based on geography. Ms. Richardson gives very thoughtful insight into this topic and I thought that she did an excellent analysis of various mediums throughout the book, far better than any teacher that I had in both high school and college.I had a few gripes, but I will only mention one. In regards to the chapter involving gangsta' rap, it is amazing that Ms. Richardson didn't mention the group "United Front". In my opinion, this group is one of many rap groups that epitomizes black masculinity. Why this group wasn't mentioned, I have my speculations, but truly, I don't know.I definitely recommend this book. For potential black revolutionaries, I do think that this will be a bit tame.
