No only the right one seams to be capable of working by itself

Can you use these without the app?

Yes you can. I mostly do. The app is used to add features, like EQ settings and how much Hear Through you want. Otherwise they function perfectly without. Look up the button controls to turn on Hear Through, control volume and skip tracks all from the ear phones themselves.
