Hello! When viewed from the side the head collar should resemble a “V”. To test the fit of the nose loop gently pull it forward. It should go no further than the fleshy point on the dog’s nose and you should not be able to pull it completely off the dog’s nose. Please also ensure that the collar portion is snug and high up on the neck. If you have any other questions, please reach out to us directly at PetSafe for fitting and training needs.

Q: My puppy currently wears a medium, based on his weight, but it looks tight. Should I order him a bigger size?

I would say yes get a bigger one if it is still too tight when the clip that is around the neck is already as big as it goes, and the clip that adjusts the loop that goes around the nose is a loose as it goes. Double check that it is being worn according to the company recommendations. I found that I ordered mine in his weigh range and it was big.. but he has some growing to do still.

Q: How does this work with a harness?

You can use it with a front-connecting harness such as the Petsafe 3-in-1, but you'll need two comfortable 6' leashes. I taught my Golden Retriever using a front-connecting harness and a Gentle Leader. He was able to explore a bit, and when I needed more leverage/control, I switched my hand to the headcollar. Another tip: you can mute the effect of the headcollar by connecting the leash to the headcollar AND your dog's collar. If your dog is fussing with the Gentle Leader, make SURE you have it fitted properly, that you are using high-value treats on walks, and you are not stiff-arming the dog. If you are, the dog will fight the headcollar. I recommend the Petsafe Martingale collars, fitted according to the instructions, for a collar. Always make sure each leash has a sturdy metal snap!
