The Girl On The Train follows three women and each one tells her own story. Rachel travels by train twice a day to London pretending to go to work. She fears being evicted from her flat if the landlady finds out she has lost her job. She lost her job, because of her drinking. When she drinks, she blacks out. In fact, she has lost everything, her husband, her job and her home. The train flashes past Bleinheim Road, where Rachel used to live with her ex-husband Tom. A few doors down lives a couple that Rachel watches daily, when the train stops at the signal. To Rachel, they are the ideal couple. Every morning they have breakfast on the terrace. Rachel can't take her eyes off them. Their lives seem perfect. Her life is not. She has even given them names, Jess and Jason. Megan Hipwell ran an art gallery before it folded. Her brother, Ben, died in a motorbike accident. She tried to work as a nanny for the couple who live a few doors down the street, but it didn't work out. She didn't like the woman and she quit. Megan is married to Scott, an IT consultant, who seems to love her very much. Is their marriage the perfect marriage as Rachel seems to think? Anna is married to Tom, who is Rachel's ex-husband, and they have a baby daughter. They live in the home where Rachel once lived with Tom. Anna's life with Tom would be perfect if not for Rachel barging into their lives. Rachel calls Tom regularly and sometimes hangs around their home, which is creepy. Rachel is always under the influence of alcohol. Anna is afraid of her and wants to move, but Tom says he can't afford it. One day a crime is committed and everyone is a suspect. While on the train, Rachel sees something shocking and she decides to go to the Police. They hear her out, but because of her drinking she is not a reliable witness. Rachel is not giving up. She is doing her own detective work. Any one of the above women and their husbands could be the one who committed the crime. They each have a good reason to. The author takes you on a journey with its twists and turns that keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat. The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins is her first thriller. The writing is superb and the pacing is right on. I can hardly wait for the author's next thriller. I enjoyed this novel and I can highly recommend it.

To say this book is gripping and you won't be able to put it down is an understatement. However, I will be the first to admit that this was nothing like I'd expected, not from the synopsis nor the reviews. I bought this book after witnessing all the hype surrounding it and the plot seemed very interesting, albeit a bit vague, enough for me to purchase it. I loved the idea of a girl on the same train every morning and evening, spying on people and creating whole lives for them in her head. I loved the idea of her witnessing something crazy and finding herself in the middle of a thrilling crime. What I didn't expect is that this girl is an irritating alcoholic, who brings nothing but trouble, who is obsessive, and who is honestly, just sickening to read about. I did not expect this girl, spying on people, to be actually spying on the neighborhood where she used to live with her husband Tom, who cheated on her and then left her for that woman. Tom, who now has a child with that woman and is living with his new family in their house. Rachel struck me as unstable with a load of mental issues. Her drinking problem really got on my nerves at one point, but Paula Hawkins still made me want to read on to find out what happened. One mysterious night, Rachel returns to the flat she's sharing with a friend bruised and bleeding. She blacks out, and wakes up the next morning not able to remember anything. All she knows is that the night before she had gotten off the train at the stop where she usually sees the couple she spies on, who she later finds out are called Megan and Scott, but everything after that is erased from her memory. She has an angry voice mail from her ex-husband asking her to leave them alone, that she's scaring his wife, Anna. She doesn't know what she's done this time, but is terrified due to the condition she woke up in. When she realizes that Megan has disappeared and the police are interrogating her about her whereabouts the night before, she is even more freaked out and becomes, if possible, even more obsessive. She makes it her mission to try and remember what happened that night and involves herself in everyone's lives, including that of Megan's husband and therapist. A lot of the times she makes things much worse, but sometimes, she comes close to piecing together the missing pieces. We are also given a glimpse into Megan and Anna's lives as they get to narrate their own chapters. We find out what Megan's life was really like with her husband and with her past, and we delve into Anna's insecurities and fears. I can't say I liked any of the characters, male or female. However, I found myself reading on until the very last page unable to pull myself away from the book. For that, I gave it 5 stars, because it takes real skill for an author to be able to suck me in this much despite my loathing for the characters. I can't say I expected more, but I did expect something completely different.

Ce roman policier est complètement atypique : Rachel, une jeune femme divorcée, en coloc, à la dérive, alcoolique prend le train tous les jours pour se rendre à son travail. Son train marque l'arrêt tous les matins quelques minutes aux abords de l'arrière du pavillon où elle a vécu autrefois avec son mari. Sur la terrasse d'un autre pavillon tout proche, elle remarque un jeune couple "glamour" qui prend son petit déjeuner les matins. Elle leur invente des noms, Jess et Jason, une histoire romantique et ils comblent le vide abyssal de sa vie. Un matin, déception, Jess est sur la terrasse, embrassant un homme qui n'est pas Jason. Quelques jours plus tard, les journaux révèlent que Jess, dont le vrai nom s'avère être Megan, a disparu de manière inquiétante. Rachel décide de mener l'enquête...... Mais qui s'intéresse aux divagations d'une alcoolique désespérée et incohérente ? Elle détient pourtant dans un coin de sa mémoire la vérité sur cette disparition. Bien écrit et captivant de la 1ère à la dernière page, j'ai été fascinée par l'histoire qui sort de tous les classiques du genre. Amatrice de policiers anglo-saxons, c'est mon meilleur roman depuis longtemps, je crois que c'est le premier roman de cette ancienne journaliste, un "coup de maître" je suis déjà impatiente de lire le second.
