Perler Multi-Mix Fuse Beads Jar, Assorted Colors, Pack of 22000 (PER17000)

What better craft for a summer break than a giant jar of perler beads? This massive jar made so many fun creations and there’s still a lot left. There are a good variety of colors and I fear they’ll never run out. They work as expected - my 12yo figured out the right amount of time and pressure to make so many things with these. Good value compared to smaller kits. I don’t think it came with the molds to hold them while ironing but those are easy to find.

Let me be clear - this is a screaming deal for the quantity and variety of beads you get. They're first quality, not seconds and if you are familiar with Perler beads, you won't have any surprises. You are getting exactly what you're paying for. Now that that's out of the way, let me also say: you don't need 22000 beads. Really. Unless you're running a business selling Perler bead crafts or a summer camp craft barn, 22000 beads is too many. I say this with a wry smile because I have spent a couple of hours separating beads by color and each of the sections has a decent number of each color bead (like others have said 30+ colors), more than enough for my kids to start projects and the jar still looks like I never opened it. You're going to buy them. You're going to think I'm exaggerating. I know because I did too. Have a good sense of humor, a glass of wine, and a good bright overhead light handy when you open your shipping box. Unless you need special colors, you will never need Perler beads ever again.

I absolutely LOVE having my kids spill this all over the table, onto the chairs and all over my floor. I am in LOVE with the pinging sound it makes in the vacuum cleaner as I go over them. And, it's so fun to watch my puppies and kitties chase them across the floor and see them in the litter box or in their 'bathroom' duties. Talk about some colorful poo! Okay - that was total sarcasm. My kids are totally into making bead craft projects. They make me magnets for my filing cabinet at work, my fridge, their lockers - it's become a lot of fun for our entire family to sit down and create characters or whatever. We made Angry Bird Christmas ornaments one year and decorated our tree in Angry Birds (not really Christmas-y, but it was a fun family project). My kids make their Valentine Cards with these - just a lot of fun. So, yes, they're a pain to clean up when they are dumped everywhere (by accident, of course), but it's worth it. This was a great Christmas gift for them... However, I was so outdone. I bought them this 22,000 count bead jar. My parents bought them another 750,000 in individual colors or buckets that are 'themes'. Great price and in the area I live in, these are hard to find. Wal-Mart carries their version of 'melty-beads' and I'm sorry - they are not the original Perler Beads. These melt like they should and hold up like they should. Very happy with them!

Yes this a lot of beads yes for some people this can be tedious sorting them out, but for me it’s actually relaxing. I bought a nice 56 container holder and pour out some beads and load them up with tweezers ( super fine point ones). For colors I need more of I bought a bigger 16 container one. It’s actually super relaxing to sit in front of the tv and sort beads. Makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something. The colors are nice. Now, if I could only get the ironing part down, I’d be in business. Ironing out the patterns in an iron that doesn’t tell me what is medium heat, now that sucks. If you are not careful, the beads will stick to the paper or you will fuse the beads too much. I’ll get it one of these days ;). This is good to have if you are planning a lot of projects. I am so I think I’m good on beads for a long time. Plus the details and the pictures says they are mixed so don’t get upset if you get this huge things of beads that are mixed. Just plan on spending awhile sorting. Or let the kids do it!

Definitely more than enough beads to get started! I recommend looking into the best supplies and methods before getting started. For example, I ended up getting two plastic compartment boxes and curved tweezers here on Amazon to help with sorting. I counted 36 colors, some of them you only get a very small amount of as you can see from my attached pictures. That being said, this is enough to get started with, just be prepared to do some sorting, or pay the extra money to get pre-sorted colors. I’ve sorted through almost half of my jar within the last few days taking an hour or so at a time to sort. You can see from the pictures just how much you get of each color (I’ve used a few for already for my first creation which came out okay but I definitely need more practice!) I’m not sure why they only add a very small amount of some colors, for example I’ve only found two beads so far of that periwinkle-type blue out of the at least 5,000 beads I’ve sorted. Overall, great quality product and lots of fun. Personally, I like the sorting so I don’t mind that part of it :)

I mean, Perler's brand the way to go if you want your projects to last. Anyone who has used the cheaper versions knows they're not really saving money here. These melt evenly, have beautiful colors. Should last my kids about two weeks before I need more. I'm telling you, if you can get your kids hooked on Perler beads (which for me was not hard at all) you will be thanking yourself. Even with having to step on the little buggers - and they are arguably as painful as Legos underfoot - anything that keeps two kids busy for hours and days on end is freaking worth it. My kids made a whole zoo with all the animals and the cheaper beads fell apart while they played but the Perler ones stayed together.

I wish I wouldn't have bought it. I'll explain. I thought my children would really enjoy perler beads and I wanted them to be able to do the advent calendar and several of the different holiday projects that are shown on their website. You have to have a certain number of beads of certain colors to do these projects. I figured the costs of buying this container vs. buying the individual color bags of 1000 ct each. It was cheaper to buy them this way. I'm quickly figuring out though, that it is a huge pain. I have no desire to hand my kids a jar with 22,000 beads because, lets be honest here, we all know how that would turn out. My plan was to fix up baggies that had the pattern and the beads needed to complete it and ration them out. I've taken on the job of sorting these beads and I'm cursing myself every step of the way for not spending a little more on the individual bags. These little suckers are not fun to sort. They're small and there are about 30 colors of them and 22,000 in all. I sorted for about 5 hours today while my oldest two were in school and I was only about 1/4 of the way through. When my husband got home, he helped and we both sorted another 3 hours. We are currently only halfway through the jar. If you intend to try this, buy the tweezers, they are a lifesaver. I gave this product 4 stars because i received exactly what I expected. The beads are great and so far I'm seeing a pretty even mix of colors. If you intend to give this to your children to freeplay and create at will, this would probably be perfect for you. If you want to do the specific patterns and projects, I suggest buying the individual bags. Otherwise, you will end up frustrated and annoyed by the sorting or you will be depending on your children to handle a giant jar of small beads to dig through to get the colors they need. Sometimes the price for convenience really is worth it.

Perler Beads 22,000 Count Bead Jar Multi-Mix. This is such a huge jar of beads that we are still using it years after buying it. It is great for when the kids are being creative and need many colors to work with at once. We do also like to buy the individual colors in the bags from the craft stores but honestly this jar is the reason my kids first got hooked on making things with Perler beads since it was the first time I ever bought them these things. I have also learned my lesson to only ever use the Perler brand because they just hold up better and others do not fit the forms nearly as well. The colors stay night and bright when melted unlike others we have tried in the past. If you already have some of the forms to use then when this jar on sale it is really the biggest bang for your buck to have so many beads for creating with.

By far the most economical and fun project I’ve come across. Compared to other brands as well as individual bags, the 22000 assorted jar is the cheapest option for the best price, at $0.0015 per bead compared to the average 1000 single Color bag at $0.007 per bead based on current prices of $34.00 for 22000 jar and $7.00 for single bag of white beads - both by Perler. Also more economical than the Artkal 22000 jar that comes to $0.0029 per bead. I was able to sit down for a weekend in my spare time and sort about half of the assorted 22000 beads. It is tedious, but if you enjoy handy crafts you will likely enjoy sorting them, and it is well worth the wait when you finally get results. When factoring in sorting time, it is debatable if time will cost you money, if looking to sell your craft items, as the time it takes to sort the beads definitely cuts into time used to make crafts. Sorting beads is a long process, but I found what worked best for myself was putting one Color into a container of some sort (I used the smallest measuring tool I could find) and then dumping the beads into the storage container. This way I wasn’t wasting time picking up single beads and going back and forth or having to pool them into the palm of my hand which became painful over time just from the position of my hand. As my first project, I tested making the iconic PokeBall in a variety of styles. Using the mini Perler tweezers came in very handy even using with the 5mm beads. The peg boards were bought separately - I suggest looking for good deals as many come in packs of 2-4 for $15. You start by using your tweezers and picking up and placing beads one by one onto the board to create your design. It is fairly fast once you get used to the motions, and I rarely had issues picking up the beads. Sometimes for those stubborn ones I just used my hands or I had to fidget for awhile before it got into place - not a dealbreaker at all, just apart of the craft. When I finished my design I used the masking tape method (I’ve read not to use Scotch tape as it will melt and make a mess) to transfer my beads. You take pieces of masking tape and slightly overlap them until your piece is entirely covered. Make sure to make the pieces of tape slightly larger than your design and stick the edges of the first piece of tape to the board, as this will prevent the tape from curling up and taking your beads off of the pegboard prematurely (I was unaware of this so the first time I tried the tape method I had to place my beads down again on the board to realign them). Optionally you can pierce holes through the tape to help the air escape when ironing (I did not do this for my first project but I will next time and see if it makes a difference). Be sure to press the tape firmly on the beads - especially on the outer layer - as you don’t want your beads to unstick from the tape yet. Once pressed you should be able to easily lift your project off of your pegboard. The tape method also helps prevent melting your board overtime as with the tape method you don’t have to iron over your board. Face the tape face down on a flat surface (preferably one that is heat safe) and get some parchment paper and put it over your design (for this project I just used the iron paper that came with the beads but the creases in it could potentially leave crease lines on your design so be wary). For my iron, I am using the Cricut Heat Press 2, with the settings at 275 degrees Fehrenheit and 20sec. If you use a standard iron, don’t use water. When ready, put your iron on the parchment paper and heat away. Always move your iron in circular motions or keep the design where the heat is concentrated most. Apply minimal pressure. I check my design after 20secs to see if the beads have melted / fused yet. If not, I go back for another 20secs but apply minimal to no no pressure. When visibly fused (beads will look slightly squished and flatter) check to see if there are any loose beads. If so, iron again. If no loose beads, take a heavy flat object like a textbook and immediately place over design and wait about 30secs to a minute to cool. When cooled enough, take the tape off by gently peeling it off. When done, iron the side the tape was on with minimal pressure. This is to ensure beads are fused together enough that they won’t fall apart. Overall, ironing will take practice, patience, attention and trial and error. See what setting you like best, what the end design you like, and so on. If you over iron, your design will look like a marshmallow. If you apply too much pressure, your design will not have an even width and it will look like the beads are a candle that has candle wax overflowing.
