Heartwarming. Love this.
A heartwarming story I was hoping I could use to encourage love of animals and not eating them but does mention feeding chicken to the cat. However, I really love the meaning here. The little girl reaches out to a cat and a new child in school who seems a bit out of place. We can all do with showing a bit more love in our actions and from the heart. Just like esperanza.

Best Children's Book I Have Ever Read
This book brought tears to my eyes. Esperanza meets a friend at school from Vietnam named Bao. She learns to be friends with him and also learns to be friends with herself by following "the other golden rule - to treat ourselves like we would treat a friend." A lot happens in this interesting book packed with wisdom - Esperanza finds a stray cat and names her Cleocatra, she performs in the school play and at a soccer game and learns to handle emotions of sadness with self-compassion. I also love the downloadable resources that come with the book (available on the author's website). I wish I had learned these skills of emotional intelligence and self-compassion when I was a kid, and I wish I known these skills when I was raising my own three children. My daughter is now a teacher and has this book to read to her students. I think the book is also very meaningful for adults - so many of us adults still need to learn kind self-talk. The illustrations are great. You will not be sorry if you get this incredibly moving and wise book.
