I am a qualified Food Scientist and can share some facts regarding scientific studies for you to make an informed decision based on scientific data. The role of hot mate in increasing the risk of cancer of esophagus, larynx, and oral cavity seem to be supported by several epidemiological studies when drinking hot. The temperature could act by damaging the mucosa. However, there is no sound population study on mate consumption as a risk factor for cancer. More research needs to be done before a definitive statement can be made regarding cancer risk associated with any of the various forms of mate consumption. The only studies I have found that could relate to cancer association with mate consumption will indicate if drinking more than 1L of hot mate per day. Hope it helps
