Q: What size for a 17' 6" alumacraft boat?

Depends. I use 2 18’s. On bow and stern for a side drift. 24 out the stern for a slow troll.

Q: Does it float or sink ?

The drift sock sits underwater. I placed a float in front of the sock help it float. Works like a charm!

Q: do I need to use 2- 36" drift socks on my 18.5' Lund at the same time off the bow? Or can I get by with 1 sock?

It depends on your outdrive size, I use 2 on a 19’ glastron with a V8
