Rich History of Which I'd Like to Learn Even More!
For largely "faithful allies" it sure seems the Choctaw got stepped on over the years by no less than several US presidents in their past history (among others). For a short book was certainly an interesting one including mention of what set them apart from other Native Americans such as blankets made from twisted turkey feather thread, devising a simple oral/sign language for trade and being singularly advanced in music/verse development. Clearly had a long history being among the first of the Five Civilized Tribes to adopt European customs and covered many noteworthy historical events like the horrific Battle of Mobila (1540) versus Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and his troops, joining forces with Andrew Jackson in the Creek Indian War (1813) only to eventually be forced by the same on the tragic Trail of Tears journey, and how their joining the Confederacy had impacted their lives as well as their heroic rescue of both survivors and dead from the train derailment into the Chunky River near Hickory, Mississippi as reported by Clara Kidwell (fancy that!) Lots more to like in this book including a section towards the end of the book with brief biographies of Choctaw Leaders of Renown and mention of the WW2 era Code-Talkers along with a few photos of paintings from Francois Bernard and Alexandre de Batz that are well worth looking up more of on the internet. AS longer winded as my review is I have to say I really enjoyed it so will give it the full 5 star treatment. Great book and one well worth reading!

Even Though They Were Quick to Adapt to the Europeans, They were Decimated, Just Like the Other Tribes:
`Neither the Choctaws nor Chickasaws ever engaged in war against the American people, but always stood as their faithful allies.' - Horatio CushmanHowever, their alliance with the Americans did not help when Americans wanted their lands. They were driven along the Trail of Tears, just like other Indian tribes. The authors promise to educate the reader about the subject at hand (the Choctaw) in only a few minutes. What a clever plan; I believe anyone can absorb history in small sips.I'd always heard of the Five Civilized Tribes and wondered what that meant. The Five Civilized Tribes included:* Cherokee,* Choctaw,* Seminole,* Creek and* Chickasaw Indians. The title refers to the fact that they quickly assimilated certain aspects of European culture into their own. When conflict came with the Europeans, they were the strongest confederation around. If the other Indian tribes had been able to get past their ancient rivalries to form confederations, US history might have been very different. The Choctaws came from the Ancient Moundbuilders (b & w + color photos), groups of indigenous peoples who roamed North America in the mists of time.Using photos and color drawings, this booklet shows as well as tells about the Choctaw's origins, their history, and their lasting legacy. This peaceful group of people, who were extremely slow to raise weapons against anyone, was robbed of more than 11 million acres of America - by US government treaties. As the authors promised, this is a quick read -- but it maintains its grip on the reader to see the wrong done to these peaceful people.

Not good quality
I am very unhappy with how my book came. It is cut and bent. It was also VERY delayed. I need this for a paper I have to write which is due in less than two weeks.

Ok Book.
Had hoped this book would have shed more light on this Native American Tribe. But book didn't give any new knowledge.

Short, but nice
Bought this as a gift for a gentleman with Choctaw genetics. He liked it. I was a bit sorry that it was more of a booklet than a book especially since it was a gift.
