Do you leave the toothpate in your mouth for awhile after brushing for the best results?

I will usually wait a while before I rinse my mouth out after brushing. I did not find any instructions with the tooth paste instructing me to do so. I do it out of habit because my dental hygienist advised me to do so many years ago, regardless of the kind of tooth paste.
