Every kid wants to be a drummer, and this is the coolest way ever to get started! Sam Zucchini makes it fun and easy as he teaches how to keep time, count beats, understand rhythm and generally get tuned in to playing in an ensemble. The other Zucchini Brothers (popular children's entertainers, musicians and all-around colorful personalities) join in on guitar and keyboards so the young drummer can play along with the band. If there's a drum set in the house, that's fine -- but not necessary. Sam takes an ordinary kitchen stool and shows how to start using drumsticks to keep the beat on the rubber step-pad. The learning drummer develops coordination and timing through a series of interactive exercises that keep him or her involved and actively participating by playing along with the lesson. After teaching basic time-keeping, Sam moves on to the slightly more advanced concept of playing three different elements of the drum set (or stool): the snare, hi-hat and bass drum. By the time the lesson is completed, it will be time to take on more serious studies and the challenge of full drum set technique. Do not go out and purchase an expensive drum set. Buy some sticks and a practice pad. The "Zuchini Brothers" have engaging and outgoing personalities that kids love. The lessos start very basic, and are best done with short segments, practice inbetween, and lots of rewards (kids love stickers). Keep a notebook with lots of praise. When your child completes the lessons, and has a real love for drums, it may be time to purchase that first piece, or junior set. Lots of silly faces, expressions, and laughter, all while a 3 piece talented band plays catchy tunes that kids love. "You are what you eat" and other such songs keep your child's interest. Great DVD for kids
I bought this for my nephew's 3rd birthday and he has watched it about 100 times. Unfortunately he's too young for private instruction, but he has always been obsessed with drums, and he's got great timing so far!

not for younger kids
Have to agree with other reviewers here. Too much talk, not enough action . If you wade through all the somewhat manic banter, he really has a very good fundamental set of progressive drills for learning how to drum properly, but my five-year-old lost interest after about five minutes and so did I. Maybe older kids who are self-motivated will get more out of this.

Mom and Dad were happy to get this DVD. Grandson will be getting lessons on drumming and this will help.

For 3 year olds....maybe..no parent will be able to stomach this video..ugh.
My young son looked at me within a few minutes of the video starting and said " How can you make me watch this? It's awful. I'm going to go watch you tube". He's not kidding, it's an assault on the senses. I'm keeping this video and going to figure out some way to make others watch it as a practical joke. Wow.

My 3.5 year old has been watching this video none stop for days. I was disappointed that they didn't play actual drums for most of it but instead a stool, but it doesn't seem to bother my kid, and what do I know about drums.

Great book for beginners
Perfect book for those looking to take up drumming at an early age.

Drumming for kids - for my 8yr old grandson
This is a xmas present so I watched it beforehand to assess it's suitability. I was very pleased as it is perfectly pitched for an 8yr old, not like a boring lesson, but fun and interactive, I'm sure he'll enjoy it.
