Capturing the Devil (Stalking Jack the Ripper, 4)

Capturing the Devil was everything I wanted from the final book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series, except for one thing—I genuinely wish it wasn't the final book. One of my favorite things about this entire series has been the way Kerri Maniscalco blends history, forensic medicine, murder, suspense, and romance without making any one of those elements feel completely out of place. Capturing the Devil brings all of that together as Audrey Rose and Thomas find themselves in America investigating a killer connected to the disappearances surrounding Chicago and the World's Fair. The Murder Hotel and White City Devil storyline gave this book such an unsettling historical backdrop, especially knowing that parts of the story were inspired by real people, places, and events. But as much as I love the murder investigations and medical history in these books, Audrey Rose and Thomas are what made me truly fall in love with the series. Their relationship has developed throughout all four books, and I loved seeing the romance take an even larger role in this one. Thomas remains one of my favorite characters, and their intelligence, banter, stubbornness, and devotion to one another make them such an entertaining pair to follow both romantically and while investigating a murder. I also love Audrey Rose as a main character. Watching a young woman pursue forensic medicine and refuse to accept the limitations society tries to place on her is one of the things that made this series so different and interesting to me. The historical medical and forensic details throughout the series were fascinating without taking away from the suspense of the story. As a finale, Capturing the Devil gave me the suspense, romance, history, and characters I had grown attached to throughout the series. My biggest complaint is honestly that I wanted more. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Audrey Rose and Thomas, and I would happily read another four books following the two of them solving cases together. I would absolutely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, forensic or medical history, serial-killer mysteries, suspense, and romance—especially if you like all of those things mixed together. Capturing the Devil was an easy five stars for me and a wonderful ending to one of my favorite series.

When it's a series I love, I always find it hard to wrap-u the last book. I end up trying to prolong reading it so that I can stay with the characters and in the world for longer. The Stalking Jack the Ripper series is one of those series I’m sad to see end. Capturing the Devil was a phenomenal last book. Kerri Maniscalco created a culminating story that really brought the whole series to a close in a way that I was able to connect with. The way this book brought things full circle with the events of Stalking Jack the Ripper absolutely blew my mind. I wasn’t expecting any of what happened to take place. The plot is so incredibly intriguing that I was anxious the whole time as I tried to figure out who the criminal was. There was a tension between wanting to keep reading to figure out who did it, while at the same time trying to take my time so I could stay in the story longer. Truths were uncovered and the thriller aspect of this story is in full effect. I love the way Maniscalco is able to weave these stories. The use of historical facts and the liberties she takes within the story, always seem to make sense. Despite the fact that these murders have never been solved, I felt the conclusion to the story was completely satisfactory. Maniscalco’s writing is stellar and I love that I have been able to watch her growth as a writer by reading this series. One thing I love about crime stories is the way that authors will leave clues littered through the book. I always try my best to uncover as many as possible so that I can make sense of where they are leading. Something that Maniscalo does that I love is that at the end of her books she adds a section discussing the facts surrounding the storyline. She talks about the things she changed and will address some of the clues. I’m a sucker for a true crime story, so anytime I'm able to uncover what fact makes me even more excited and invested. We see a level in Thomas’ and Audrey Rose’s relationship that they have not previously met. These two characters have a deep connection that they do not share with anyone else. I love the way Thomas is this confident person who will stand up for Audrey Rose, even though he knows she can handle it herself, but at the same time, he often doubts that he is deserving of her love. It makes for interesting interactions and sometimes adds tension. Anyone who hasn't read the Stalking Jack the Ripper series is missing out. Capturing the Devil is everything I hoped it would be and more! It offers a beautiful conclusion to the love story of Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Creswell. It is clear that things have been leading up to this book and Mansicalco masterfully crafted this story. Seriously, if you haven’t yet read this book, you are missing out big time!

Of redemption and love.” In Capturing the Devil, Kerri Maniscalo concludes her Stalking Jack the Ripper series. There are parts of this series I adored. Thomas Cresswell for one was a fantastic specimen of fictional male, with his humor and intensity. And I think her take on Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes is really interesting to me and its a theory I was not familiar with. I like her writing style and the way the book is put together with eerie photos between chapters. I like her take on Audrey’s disability and especially the canes she had, because I am now a cane user and would love to have one like the one Audrey Rose uses. Spoiler Warnings for below! Unfortunately there are a couple of things that really bugged me, one Audrey Rose wavering in book three, I am still not over it. I just didn’t connect with her or why she was choosing to put Thomas through that and I still hadn’t quite forgiven her in this book. And the wedding being broken off. Seriously! It was so unnecessary to put them through that. The story would have been so much better without that unnecessary drama on top of all that the couple had already been through. I almost gave up on the book at that point. I really did. All of that being said, I did finish the book and I am actually really glad I did. And I will definitely be checking out future books by this author. I give this book 4 stars.

Audrey Rose and Thomas have been through hell and back... and it isn't over. Now that they are in New York and Audrey is learning to maneuver through the world with her cane, it's time to get serious. There's a killer on the loose that reminds them a bit too much of their first case- Jack the Ripper. But Jack's dead.... isn't he? Racing against the clock with very few clues to go on, can they put an end to this murderer's spree... or will one of them become his latest victim? There was so much to love in this book! Audrey and Thomas are getting closer to spending their lives together, though it won't be an easy road by any means! We're still dealing with Audrey's grief and guilt, and Thomas' worry that Audrey will change her mind. It's odd seeing him so vulnerable, but it's really good (there was actually a novella that gave us more of an insight into Thomas' mind in the timeline right before this book called Becoming the Dark Prince). While there were bits where the characters tended to be a bit.... over dramatic, let's say... it did remind me of one of those Gothic novels that would have been popular in this time frame and it stayed in keeping with the other books of the series. The premise here, finding out that Jack had a partner that may have made it to America, was really interesting and I loved watching Audrey work through her feelings about her brother. The characters are charming, and the writing has a great flow to it. This was a fantastic quick read, with the added bonus of some great pictures inserted. What really interested me, though, was the historical significance of the villian (that's all I am going to say here.... sorry, I do try to keep spoilers to a minimum). I am actually going to be looking for books on this person, as I am really intrigued. For me, this was the perfect way to wrap up the series. Five stars all the way! On the adult content scale, there's a lot of violence, language, and some sexual content. Nothing too over the top... but I would still say older teens- sixteen and up. Let's give it a five.

This is the last book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper quartet and I am so upset this has ended. I feel all the love and hope for a future of Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell. I feel the thrill of a murderer halted in his action. I feel such love for this series. This book was a bit more predictable than the last few for me. I saw the primary suspect from the first time he was introduced. I really didn't want to know more about the suspect, or even a possibility of who it was (I love the thrill of surprise) but alas I did. I think this is truly my only sadness with this last book (aside from the series ending) is that I knew too much too soon. This book definitely focused more heavily on the relationship between Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell. Actually, the entire first half was almost completely about them. It wasn't until we got to the second half and the scenery changed to Chicago did we start really honing in on the White City Devil and his connection to Audrey Rose. I really did enjoy the ending of this and the picture it painted of horror and murder. I liked how this book tied all the previous books together in one neat little package. I saw the string of connectivity draw together all the plot lines and followed this story into a well brought together and neat resolution. This is definitely one of my favorite series of all time.

In the final book of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series Audrey and Thomas must catch the most diabolic killer they have ever faced. Do they have any hope of capturing this devil? It was both wonderful and bittersweet following Audrey and Thomas on their final case. The descriptions of both New York and Chicago were beautifully written and I really felt I was standing there with the characters taking it all in. I was happy to see characters return from past books. The author picked the perfect final villain and love that she even used words out of his own mouth in one part of the book. This book had some really great plot twists which I didn't see coming. I loved all the Thomas and Audrey moments in this book. The good, the bad and every moment in between made them grow closer and they are just perfect for each other. Thomas is one of my favorite book boyfriends he is always so thoughtful and sweet with Audrey and always has me swooning. Audrey's bravery and how she always follows her dreams even when society tells her not to make her one of my favorite heroines. I will miss Audrey, Thomas, and Co. but the ending was perfect. I can't imagine a better ending for Audrey and Thomas. Rating: 5 stars

This book was EVERYTHING! I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t want Audrey Rose’s story to end and would love to see more stories in the future, but this ending was satisfying. The stakes are higher, the romance is swoony, the villain is darker and the heartache was very very real. I know of few authors who can bring her characters and the world of Victorian era England and America out better than Kerri Maniscalco. She’s such a skillful writer. A twist that will not be named made me scream and my heart hurt for a good portion of the book, but it really spurred the characters and plot through the book. I loved how fierce Audrey Rose was in the midst of physical and societal limitations placed on her. It was so good to see. I was hooked from page 1 to the end. And the Cressworth of it all had me 🥰. I loved this series so much. It’s one of the best I ever read. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Kerri Maniscalco.

This was thoroughly intriguing and entertaining!! I absolutely loved devouring the crumbs that Ms. Maniscalco weaved along the way. I felt like I was right alongside Audrey Rose as she and Thomas pieced this bloody puzzle together. I loved seeing this morbid couple come together in all ways. While this was steamy, it was tastefully done. I found the idea of a handicapped heroine extremely endearing and made Audrey Rose so much more humanesque. Thomas is utterly delightful. His wit and yearning makes him the perfect leading man. He really just needs a mama's hug. I enjoyed the inventive elements laced with facts. It takes a very clever person to achieve that properly. I came away feeling satisfied with this conclusion but also with an ache in my heart to have more Cressworth. I can't wait to see what the brilliant author brings us next!!

This was honestly one of my most anticipated reads of this year. I planned to read just a few chapters before going to bed but then that plot twist hit and I had to keep on reading. I finished at 4am in the morning. The book was really good! Now I'm a bit sad that it's over though. What is this book about: The book starts off where the last one ended. Audrey-Rose and Thomas just arrived in America and discovered they, well not they personally but the ship they where on, delivered America it's own Jack the Ripper. Things seem to be progressing well between Audrey Rose and Thomas. They are back on track after their hick up in book 3, but not everyone seems to be on board with their love. Someone is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they don't get married. With a race against the clock Audrey Rose and Thomas are trying to catch the Devil before he kills again and before everything they worked for, everything they wanted gets ripped away from them. What did I love about this book: I love Audrey Rose and Thomas's relationship. They are for sure one of my OTP. I love their growth and how they worked together. My heart stopped at their wedding. For those of you who read the book, you'll know why. I honestly sped read through the rest of the book because I had to know how things would work out. How they could possibly fix the damage. I hated Thomas's father so so so much. I can't phantom why he would do that to his on child, to his own children. By the end I was still so mad at him, and I couldn't grasp why Audrey Rose and Thomas let him be at their wedding in the end. Like my god, I would have tossed his sorry ass off a cliff and call it an accident. Overall it was a great conclusion to the series. The series took a twist I didn't expect when I read the first book. Everything came together so well. Kerri has raw skill and talent, it's amazing that this is her first series. I can't wait to see what else she can come up with. Rating: 5 amazing stars
