Overall, this is a great microphone but tends to be best for specific use cases. It comes in a fairly simple Shure branded box that holds the microphone with yoke mount and XLR port already attached, a brass thread adapter for 3/8” to 5/8” stands, and the larger black A7WS windscreen, along with the usual Shure paperwork. The standard foam windscreen is already fitted to the mic in the box along with the yoke, so it’s pretty much ready to go as soon as you unpack it. The build and weight are one of the first things you notice. It’s got a lovely matte black, understated colour with no obvious branding. And there’s a good amount of heft to it, especially compared to other microphones. The weight does help it feel like it’s a pretty solid device and can stand up to regular use, however, there is a thin wire that connects the XLR port to the body of the mic that does give me some concern. I’ve had no issues with it yet, but it definitely feels like it could be a potential weak point, The yoke mount provides a lot of flexibility in terms of positioning and allows you to angle it easily. The base of the microphone, at the opposite end to the capsule, has two switches for bass roll-off and presence boost. They're recessed, so you'll need a pen or small screwdriver to move them, which is a bit fiddly but does mean you won't knock them by accident. Personally, I don’t use them, and I don’t think they’re necessary for spoken word, but at least you have the option if you want. Because of the weight, I'd recommend a sturdy boom arm or desk stand. A cheap arm will droop over time with the SM7B hanging off it, so it's worth factoring a decent arm into the cost if you don't already have one. It’s an additional investment, but one that will pay itself off over time. Perhaps the most important thing to know before buying is the gain situation. This is a low-output dynamic microphone, and as a result, it needs a lot of clean gain to get going. From my experience, it needs at least 60dB when close to the mouth and more for every cm it moves away from the mouth. It can be tricky to get that level of gain from some XLR interfaces, and even some of those that can hit that level of gain often add noise. So, it may also be necessary to buy a preamp or Cloudlifter if you have an older interface. But, if you have a newer interface, you may be ok. I’ve used it with my Lewitt Connect 2, Focusrite Vocaster Two, and Rodecaster Duo, and all have been fine running the SM7B. Once you get the gain sorted, the performance is great. The sound is smooth, warm, and flat in the way that suits voices particularly well. It also avoids some of the harshness and sibilance you can sometimes get from brighter condenser microphones. The built-in pop filter does a decent job of taming plosives without an external one, especially if using proper microphone technique and talking across rather than into the microphone. I still opted for a good quality third-party one for mine both for a more colourful aesthetic and because I prefer the sound, but the provided one is perfectly fine. I know some people can find the microphone a little dull or muddy sounding, but I think with the right set up it can sound great. And there’s an added benefit to its cardioid dynamic pattern, which is that it is great for rejection. You can use this in an untreated room without too many concerns, and it does a good job of rejecting handling noise as well as things like typing, providing it isn’t pointed directly at the keyboard. The hum shielding is also excellent, so sitting it near a computer or monitor with fan noise doesn't introduce the buzz other microphones do. Overall, I've been very impressed. It's not the cheapest way into good spoken-word audio, especially if you do not already own equipment that can hit the right gain level. The weight also needs a decent arm or desk stand to hold it. But, if you have that and set it up right, the sound, the build, and the way it handles a less-than-perfect room make it easy to see why it's been the broadcast standard for so long. If you do a lot of spoken word and want something that offers some depth to your voice while providing clean recordings even without perfect treatment, this is a great option.

The other reviews say it all about the SM7B. It's the most popular podcast mic with all the trendy and most viewed podcasts for a very good reason (even if one of which is half of them can't stop playing with and readjusting it on the fly, and it's low handling noise let's them do so). But sound quality wise, it is truly one of the best around and THE best at the price point. However, you need lots of gain to drive it. That used to mean a fethead or similar, but so many audio interfaces have enough clean gain to drive it these days so it's less and less of an issue unless you're using old gear. The one caveat for me is that it is definitely not for all voice types. For my tone and timbre, it needs some work in post to make it palatable to the ear, but due to the quality of the thing all of the dynamics are there to allow me to do so. So it's worth bearing that in mind if you want a mic that you can plug in and go with a minimum of post production, this may or may not be the right one for you. A brighter, cheaper option like the Rode Podmic could well do the trick and save you a couple of hundred notes (enough to buy a decent interface and a second podmic). It's still great, it's just not ideal for all use cases.

I was looking for a good microphone to go with my Rodecaster Duo. With the Rodecaster being an audio power house I wanted to invest in a quality microphone to enhance the overall sound for podcasts and You Tube videos. This is not a cheap microphone but I have other Shure mics (SM58 & Super 55) for live singing scenarios and I've grown to trust the brand over the years. Shure build their microphones very well and they are very well built. I also like their aesthetic design. So I took the plunge and I have been disappointed. This is easy to set up and use and out of the box the audio quality is amazing. Plugged into the Rodecaster I can't believe what a professional sound I get. The radio DJ tone is so warm and clear. I just love it.

The Shure SM7B is a fantastic piece of kit. It's very simple to use and requires no power. It's compatible with any XLR interface and looks sleekon camera thanks to the built-in cable management and XLR Output location.. It is, however, a very gain-hungry microphone, so you'll need to up the gain quite a bit on your interface. This can introduce a lot of background noise, so you'll want to pair it with an interface that has a high enough amp. It's costly, but otherwise good for money.

Alright - I have some mixed feelings about the Shure SM7B It’s good in terms of sound quality but the additional purchases are not really talked about - for example this mic is really heavy so you need a good mic arm or stand to hold this, if you have one already or a friend has a spare that is good for the Shure SM7B you won’t really find this an issue, but I had to spend £75.00 on a LP Mic Arm. Now, I originally brought a Shure MVX2U and it worked on my mic fine, however when using calls like WhatsApp, Discord, Zoom or Meets, it would have this hissing sound I looked into this and turns out it is something to do with the noise floor and the gate of the mic, but the MVX2U is said to be ‘the one for the Shure SM7B’ Alright, and my MVX2U broke — so I got that refunded thanks to Amazon and I chipped in more money to buy myself a Focusrite 2i2 4th Gen and a SubZero MB1 After buying a mic arm, three XLR cables, a new interface and gain booster, the mic finally sounded alright. Originally I had the podmic usb and it was easy to setup, nowhere compared to this. This mic is hard to setup. Now the compatibility on this mic just depends on what you get online to pair with this, like if you have a Mac just get a USB C interface, and it’ll do if it has a good decibel gate. The value for money here is alright, I can see why this is the industry standard because once it works, it sounds really good. Well this is my review, thank you for reading!

Vi muchas reseñas que supuestamente tenía un sonido muy grave y oscuro, pero la verdad no he tenido necesidad de comprarle un preamp como el Cloudlifter o algo así. Con la pura Scarlet 2i2 de 4ta tiene suficiente y da siempre un sonido súper claro y limpio. Incluso me atrevo a decir que tengo que evitar subirle la ganancia de más porque entonces sí se vicia. Obviamente no viene mal una buena ecualización y es justo lo que ayuda a levantarlo todavía más, pero me parece que tiene un desempeño muy bueno por sí solo. En cuanto a calidad, se nota que está hecho para durar jaja es pesado pero muy resistente. Definitivamente para conservarse toda la vida.
